This is a beauty.

Yes it is... A very fast-flying butt and often with damaged wings, so it's always with a bit of luck to shoot a newly hatched one. Stops for a few seconds like that only, so using a tripod for such shots is usually out of the question.

1st one is really excellent

what is it feeding on ? Are they shy ?

Thanks, Mega. They feed on damp seepages along forest paths. Very alert and skittish, so your zoom + ext tube combo would be a plus for shooting butts like these.

Thanks for the info .. how far do you think is the min. distance tt can close to this butt

Hello Papilio

Enclosed maps part of central catchment area, I hope with the maps you can direct me to the locations where butts go crazy over fruits juices.

This one was about 1.5m from me. With the extension tube, the 80-400VR's minimum focusing distance is still not as good as Canon's 100-400IS.

The butt can sometimes stay still whilst feeding, and will only be alerted by movements around it. I sat patiently and waited for it to come near, and then went prone on the ground to get a nearly eye-level shot. A lot of luck when shooting these fast-flyers though...

Anyone buses to reach there?

Quite a long walk from where the bus stop is, at Thomson Road. But along the way, there's lots of nature to shoot though. :)

Excellent butterfly shots!

Walk along Peirce Track. There are a few offshoots from this trail that's not shown on your map. Also walk alongside the fence of the Bukit Kallang Service Reservoir. There's a large Lantana bush where occasionally, there's lots of Cruisers and Lacewings feeding there.

Good luck!

I took bus 163 from Toa Payoh. Drop at the bus-stop outside Island Country Club, then walk up the the road to the club. Before the main entrance is a side road on the left. Follow it and you'll reach the trail. And yes, its a damn long walk LOL.
