hi everyone,

really appreciate some advice here... im currently using a nikon d80 and is contemplating getting a sigma 30mm f1.4. My current lens lineup is as such

1. nikon 18-200mm
2. nikon 85mm f1.4
3. nikon 50mm f.18

i know f1.4 produces some really amazing shots, my considerations are that
1. how does iq n bokeh of sigma 30mm f1.4 compare to nikon 85mm f1.4?
2. do i really need a sigma 30 since i alr have a 50mm prime (which i find a lil restrictive in terms of distance)? frm what i gather, the advantage of the sigma over my 50mm is f1.4 n wider whereas the advantage of the nikon 50mm is that it can be used on a fx camera...

Really appreciate some wise words here...

Many thanks in advance...

I think needless to say, many people will recommend the 30 f1.4 over the 50mm. Why? Because the 30mm on your D80 translates to about 45mm in 35mm equivalent terms. So this would be the closest thing you get to 50mm (in 35mm terms) on your DX camera, which is great for portraits.

You mention that the nikon 50mm's "advantage" is that it can be used on an FX camera. Do you intend to upgrade? Even if you do, the 50mm f1.8 cost is negligible compared to the cost of an FX camera.

With regards to IQ for the Sigma, I've read that it's excellent, and provides beautiful bokeh. How it compares to the 85 1.4, hopefully someone else who has both lenses can provide their comments.

i used to own the sigma 30mm on canon mount and it is a really good lens. bokeh is beautiful and the contrast is more contrast than contrast. field-of-view of 30mm on a cropped cam is definitely more comfortable than a 50mm. but then again personally preference. why not go down to a shop and try it out?

value for money lens that has a nice build, and hood.

: ))

that's true... i guess when i can finally afford a fx, the 50mm will be considered peanuts...

You also consider Nikon AF-D 35mm F2 lens. There are several threads about this lens. In addition, at the moment, a poll comparing Nikon 35mm lens against Sigma 30mm F1.4.

where is the thread? link?

bought this lens after much consideration. here are some thoughts

first impression after a couple of days is that it is really quite a decent lens.

build quality is solid, comes with a sturdy lens pouch (my first 3rd party lens, so easily impressed). rear lens cap is rubbish though.

my copy doesnt seem to have front/back focusing problem (phew...)
but it does SEEM to overexpose slightly in daylight (maybe it's my fault, i dunno)

overall, i am quite satisfied and i personally feel it is more contrasty n sharper than my old nikon 50mm f1.8.

Congrats on your purchase. I have mine for about a year and I used it more than my nikon 50mm f1.4 (I like the focal length of 30mm). I also like it for being sharp and contrasty too.
