Should I buy the D800

Also, why would 50 f/1.4 AF-S be considered an upgrade from 50 f/1.8? I'm puzzled. Is it because it's a f/1.4 and yet costs <$1K? You're pretty much better sticking off with the 50 f/1.8 AF-D since D800 supports D lenses with AF.

The 50 f/1.8 D has worse bokeh than the G versions.

50mm f1.8G awesome lens,
even in the wide open for standard shoot for the background is extreme bokeh.

Never thought of upgrading the d300 to the D7000 as I love the heavy body and feel of the d300. The D7000 looks too dinky. What differences did you notice between the 2?
The AF-S 85mm f/1.4G is just an incredible lens. Beautiful bokeh and fantastic portrait lens. The new 85mm is made in China whereas the f/1.4G is made in Japan and feels like a professional piece of glass.

hmm.. I think for photography, the results matter more? That is my personal view... you may feel differently...

On the 85mm topic.. one is about 3x the price of the other.. yes bokeh is nice.. but not three times as nice (anyway subjective), and if 85mm f1.8 breaks due to built quality.. you can buy another two more.

I have a D300 and love it however would love to move to a full frame camera. The D800 seems ideal however the large pixel count is a little worrying for me. All my shots are taken hand held as I dont even own a tripod! I dont really need the 36MP but I really want to go full frame. The lenses I own are pretty good and I'm sure they would give me as much pleasure on a D800 body. (AF-S 17-55mm f/2.8G , AF-S 12-24mm f/4G, AF 50mm f/1.8D and a AF-S 85mm f/1,4G) I would probably look at buying the AF 24mm/f1.4G or the AF 50mm f/1.4D if I opt for the D800. I use the 50mm & 85mm the most.
Can I ask anyone else who has upgraded from D90 or D300 or D700 was it worth it?
Im happy with the D300 and could wait for another year if Nikon was to release a D400 with full frame?
Will I notice a huge difference between the D300 and D800?

Thanks!

Hi. I for one have upgraded frm the d300 to d800. One phrase - no regrets. Currently on holiday with the d800, the low light ability of the d800 was itself useful in taking pics in low light condition. dun have pics to show u at the moment, but definitely much better than d300 in terms of pic quality. But keep the d300 as it also has its strengths too.

As to waiting for high end dx camera, I I was thinking of same thing too. After going fx, one can still use dx lenses on the d800, but found the pics 'cropped'. In the end, I just use my 28-300mm. Good travel lens.

Hope tt helps.

If I were to get a D800, this 50 f1.8G lens will be coupled with the body 90% all the time.

Yes I agree that!

Cause last time when I'll used with my D700 with AFS 50mm F1.4G an the background is just like so so only.

So far got mine D800 with this 50mm F1.8G I think has look must better results as D700 :)

Even you need more bokeh for close up and simple switch to DX mode ha ha.
At one lens can have a 2 diff feels.

I prefer the 85mm f/1.4.

Depend you want shoot at 85mm distance or just using the 50mm wider and simple switch DX mode and = 75mm.

Hi Banyantree

Just came back from my trip. All I can say that the D800 is a amazing camera! I have shots which my D300 can never ever take! Especially in low light conditions...

But do keep the d300 as a spare.. as It's a more robust camera than the D800, imo, in terms of speed and handling issues. I faced lock up issues (which were just minor inconveniences) but the quality of photos are just fantastic. Not to mention, the filesizes are crazy :(

Here's a pic sample from my trip.. file u see is only 10% of the original size. Crazy!

The d800 requires one to have some knowledge of the basics in order to maximise its potential. Having played the d300 for quite some time, i think u shd hav no/little issues transiting to the d800. Hope that helps your decision making :)
