hey guys/gals/uncle/aunties

getting ready to go on a trip to sipadan. hope to get a camera for top side as well as underwater.. and since the PC show is coming. any recommandations?

i got a friend that has FUJI 200.. it was mighty good. but that was like a year ago

any other recommandation?

I've just bought a canon s90 with ikelite housing. Cost me slightly over 1k. I think for the price, u cannot find a better setup. So far I've only tried it in a pool, but I'm pretty impressed with it's usuability and high iso performance. U can save further if u buy canon housing.

Btw, when is ur sipadan trip? :)

Sipadan is nice, school of baracudas and humphead, lots of whitetip and turtles. However, there is a limit on the numbers of dives one can do at sipadan island.

Most dives will be at Mabul or Kapalai. There is a large school of jacks at Mabul artificial reef and 2 really huge resident grouper at Kapalai.

thanks all for the quick replies...

1K... i think its too much for me. i rather take it to plan more holiday :D

and i would like one that on dry land...enable me to keep the camera in my pocket... :D

Yes, I'm gong there this month and very much looking forward to it. I plan to do some night dives at water village house reef, practice some underwater marco shoot (new to this lah). For baracudas and jack schools.. anyone have a WIDE ANGLE LENS TO LEND ME??? (after buying camera and strobe.. very broke liao) ;p

You may like to consider buying a 2nd hand unit. Some risk there.. but u can find some really good deal. An example will be this. Certainly not the best, but for the price, cannot complain. Topside, the camera is small enuf for pocket too.

if $1k is too much, what's your budget then? a typical decent P&S is about 5-600 or more, plus housing would be about $800-1000

wow... i think 5-600ish for pns camera is normal... but the default case from them are maybe about 300+

800+ probably is the better brand....

i guess my example is probably the fujifilm 200EXR

Can't help you. What you need are wet lenses.:D

Go buy this Inon UFL-165AD. Give you a maximum angle of view underwater of 165.5 °

Your buget of $800+ is still ok... but would limit you to a less good PnS camera. Example a older model Canon IXUS camera at around $400-$500.... buying its U/W casing from Internet sites.... Locate Shops tends to only have casing for the newest model....

What I would suggest, if brand isn't a problem for you, Canon G11 or S90 with their OEM casing. Buget should be slightly over $1K for G11... and slightly below $1K for S90. Both camera have RAW and would be useful for White Balance control. :bsmilie:

well if you ask me, dont waste time (and money) on P&S setups..cos you're eventually going to end up with a DSLR underwater anyway

hahahaha

all this "use first then upgrade when i'm better" is BS! get the best, so you can't blame the camera when pictures turn out crappy! haha

no. i dun think i will use a DSLR underwater. i dun want to get into serious photography..

infact, this is probably the first camera that i am buying.

but 1K vs 800+ is a damm good argument...

BUT! 800+ can get me to a good pns setup for uw... while 1K only give me entry level for SLR... right?

1k will give you a entry level dslr camera + kit lens only.

Any dslr underwater housing alone (haven't include port system) will be over 2k. Those aluminium one will be over 3k. Every port system for each lens will be close to 1k. With dslr, you will want strobe(s) + arms whick will cost more than 1k each. And you need sync cord for strobe too.

PS - Ikelite price has dropped. Some dslr housings are now below 2k.:)
