I'm fairly new to RF and was watching chris week's video the other day. I couldn't help but admire one featured guy using the shoot from the hip technique taking streets pics... its fabulous, totally spontaneous and so up close with the subject/action. I simply  it!!!

Likewise, i took out my poor man's digital rangefinder (rd1s) coupled with a cv 35 1.4 & had a few attempts with this technique... bad bad bad... most of the shots were not in focus, worse when it comes to moving subjects. So what's the technique there? just practise & more practice to perfect or is there anything i've missed out?

Won't even contemplate film (hopefully just for now at least).... would a wide angle lens be easier with nearer infinity focus? any pointers from the masters / sifu here? TIA...

Wide angle lenses set to hyperfocal distnace ?

Or you could set f5.6 or higher and just "remember" the distance that you focus on , be it 1 meter .

You could always make sure to shoot 1 arm's length away(1 meter ?)

Full frame makes you get closer, makes shots more interesting.

Thanks guys! really appreciate the info!!! :sweatsm:

Bro take note of the sensor crop factor effects on the hyperfocal scales on the lens, the markings are meant for film or FF.

Really?? So issit easier or harder to zone focus on a cropped sensor like M8?

I didn't know that the markings are different for FF and cropped sensor, but now it makes sense.

I don't know about M8, it also depends on what aperture you set. Here's a link to a DOF calculator which has M8 (1.33x) and RD1-s (1.53x) for easy reference. Hope this helps

First attempted shot using hyperfocal distance shooting... shot from the tummy though, not hip... still need to improve my distance judgment, will get there eventually!

Fully & thoroughly appreciate all the assistance / information provided!

getting closer has to do with focal length, not whether you use full frame, crop frame, 4/3 frame, pns frame.
