She did not like her wedding video.

Hey Peeps,

I want to share my experiences and mistakes with regards to this video editing assignment.

Wenie contacted me about wedding video editing services. I said yes. We met.

I presume she had her raw wedding video clips.

Firstly, I was shocked she only had her DVD. Only one DVD. Meaning, it has been edited and treated.

Second, her wedding took place 2 years ago. Till our meet up, she was the only one in the family that didn't like the wedding video. Boy, this lady must have high expectations.

We had a long coffee session. Talking and discussing about her expectations. I also had to explain to her about data compression and low quality video. From raw files to DVD. When comes to me, it will be from DVD to compressed/extracted data and will be further compressed again for the final output.

She understood the situation and gave me the opportunity.

The only challenge I faced is that I could not ripped her video using my Windows Media Player which I am able to, usually. I found this fantastic software and it is free. It works for me.

Let me know what you guys think. If you had faced a similar request, what were your challenges and processes ?

Errrr...That's my edit. Heheheheh...

It is just that I am not the one who shot it. A wedding video company in Bali. Their technique and cinematography is solid.

Bro kandinsky, I did but I am not able to extract the whole 90 minutes. I just dun understand why it could only extract up to 4 minutes and then, my laptop hanged.

I see... Odd. Nice work on the rescue by the way. It's always interesting to edit stuff you didn't shoot. Good thing you had solid footage to work with.

Its going to be extremely tough to edit someone else clip and moreover when the bride is not happy with a pretty decently done one in the first place.

I would personally never take up such jobs cause its like diving into the unknown and possible trouble ahead with a lot of hard work potentially being look at as garbage if the clips are already shot in that particular way and no way to do a 180degrees change. Using just the DVD, I can already imagine your restrictions in the Mom's speech, you won't have any room to change the moment the camera switches to the bride or to the mom so u will just end up with the same edit (in a way).

If the original edited footage was crap, it will be worth the effort but the problem is that it was quite good so i smell trouble in all corners.

I do hope that you have collected all possible remunderations because if she still doesn't like it, most of this type of brides will just disappear.

I've done these type of projects only twice in my life and usually reject them.

One was a wedding overseas and the videographer didn't even do the highlights and I had access to all the raw. Expectations were completely manageable cause they had NOTHING and anything that comes from there is already amazing. And so i was right, they were so damn happy with my work. Or rather their shot and my edit.

2nd was a Corp job that doesn't require me to think, they already had the exact shots in mind and all i need was to create according to their requirements. The previous edit was horrible because i think the videographer was pissed with them and just randomly dump stuff into the clip. It was straight forward with reasonable expectations so it was another good project.

In anyways, u can try using iSkysoft convertor. I just converted my couple's childhood videocam DVD and it was super fast and simple.

Bro kandinsky, the bali company, the captured video clips were fantastic. I did learned something out of it. As editor, you will appreciate the shots they have taken. Solid.

XsenseX>>> When you mentioned "Using just the DVD, I can already imagine your restrictions in the Mom's speech, you won't have any room to change the moment the camera switches to the bride or to the mom so u will just end up with the same edit (in a way)."

You nailed it. I did swapped the switches of scenes with her cake cutting. I tried to bring her out in the highlights. I only did minor twitches on her mom's video scene. Lucky me, the audio was full. No cuts.

This was the case for me. The only difference is that I will only deliver in thumbdrive. If I were to deliver in DVD, I will again compressed the data. That's bad. The video quality is already quite bad. I cannot further color grade. It will bring out this "liasing" issues between filters.

Will take note of your iSkysoft convertor.

Thank you all for your sharing. Will take note of all your advises and pointers.

Love you all.

I've faced a similar issue before. The whole 90minute clip, does it break down into several 4GB+ files? Those would be 'part' files as the FAT32 file structure normally used for SD card capture (assuming the original footage was captured to an SD card) does not recognise files more than 4GB, therefore the camera would break the clip down into smaller part files, although it would still be recognised as a full video in camera.

Handbrake does not detect part files.

Guys, you dun need to "extract" videos from a DVD. Just copy out the .vob files in VIDEO_TS folder, and change the .vob extensions to .mpg.
That's all!

(of course, you need to make the file extension visible in the 1st place)

Wow! This is good knowledge. Thanks for sharing!

after viewing the video, i agree she had very high expectation. Personally i will not take the job cos nothing much to improve on.
