if you want to check out the sharpness of this 30 year old lens, have a look at the scars on the legs of the person first in line and the last girl.

i love this camera! :D

Wow! It's really sharp!!

Hmm... anybody selling the camera? :p

seems to me you got flash...where can i get one if i decide to grab this Yashica after trying it out...

right now, one roll of negative is almost done - left with 10 shots. will proceed to slides then.

I'm really wondering...how good is the lens in low-light and night conditions without flash assist? I'm really experimenting with the cam with whatever light condition that i came across. It's a heavy cam alright, still needs to get use to it's weight and size.

I found this site: http://www.edandjacqui.com Their Yashica photo samples are AMAZING. Just like yours...it's SHARP and colour saturated.

Thks for sharing Patch17...I think the more I request for samples, the more ppl would not want to sell their Yashica. :D Cos it's really a 'Cheap Leica Wannabe'!

the flash used was a simple $12 unit i bought at cash converters. it'll take any of the older flash units with the single pin in the centre. it has no dedicated flash metering or any of that fancy stuff, so you'll have to adjust the aperture according to the guide number.

here's another picture i took of a stained glass window inside a church. no flash.

WO WO WO

You took that with a F1.7? or F4? Overall, the DOF looks wide...or was it set to 'B' or 'Auto' or 'Flash'?

I have to admit, i'm becoming eager to know more from people's experiences...did mail to a few Yashica users for tips...and you are the first to reply. thks.

taken in auto mode (i didn't have a tripod, so the shot was hand held). can't recall exactly what aperture i used.

in case you didn't know, the camera has 2 "shutter priority" speeds, 1/60 and 1/500. if you set the camera to "flash", you'll lock the shutter speed to 1/60. and if you don't have any battery in the camera, it will still fire at it's fastest speed of 1/500. so you can work out the aperture settings from there and still take pictures.

another trick, in low light or night shots, set the camera to 'auto' and use a flash. the flash will fire but the shutter will remain open for the set aperture, producing neat ghost effects. (the 1st picture was taken that way, and the 2nd was in 'flash' mode.)

yes, it's a lovely little gem of a camera, and i have to admit i'm a bit nuts about them. (i have 6 of them in varying degrees of "useability".) :D

ok...flash mode locks to 1/60...so how to i know i'll get 1/500?
I read reviews, but still not sure how to make sure i get the 1/500.

oh ya...that 'Slow' n "Over' thing...i know it's for metering...so far, most of the time, i ignored it...i just shoot...and i noticed that the shutter just opens for the set aperture, regardsless if the "Slow" led lights up. It just snaps like it's taking at 1/60 shutter speeds...most of the time, i set to 'Auto'. Do you ignore this metering thing?

Where do you service your Yashica? Got a few rotten foams here and there.

if your camera has no battery, it reverts to it's max shutter speed of 1/500. all other shutter speed, including flash and bulb won't work without a battery.

as for the over and under lights, yes, i do take note of them. basically they indicate that there is no appropriate shutter speed for the aperture selected. (i.e. 'over' means the shutter speed required is faster than what the camera can achieve, 'under' means you'll need a tridpod or some support cause the shutter speed is too slow.) in very low light conditions with the camera set to 'auto', and using ISO 400 film, i notices some shutter speeds as slow as 1/2 sec even with the lens wide open.

i service the cameras myself. foam replacement is quite easy to do. a mouse pad is a very good source of replacement foam, and the felt pad can easily be replace with those little bits of felt from discarded film canisters. (i just went to the local photo kiosk and asked them if i could have some of the empty film canisters. they were more than happy to let me have a few.)

you can check out this site and it's links for more information on these lovely beasts.

Whoa guys. I had a GTN in my school days. Really like it as it was the in thing during those days as far as technology is concerned. Now you guys make me feel like knocking my head for selling it. :kok: :hammer:

Patch17:
I see...I too noticed that by pressing pressing the shutter release button halfway, it'll activate the metering device...right? Is there any shop that services the viewfinder? cos the Slow and Over arrow in the viewfinder seems out of place. it's hard to see those arrows. say, Patch, can I meet you up one of this days and show you the Yashica that i'm trying? PM me if you are ok. THKS. :D

Jbma:
The camera evolves. thus somethings you just wish it'd be sold off...and some things, you'd wish you had not sell it off. :)

yes, the arrows are a bit hard to see, you have to kinda turn your eye a certain angle to see the arrows.

no worries about meeting up one of these days. maybe if i'm well enough i might pop into next weeks SEED. if you're going, bring along your yashica (it all depends on how well i've healed up by then though.)

oh, by the way, if you hear a distinct "clunk" when you activate the film advance lever, it means that there's a dampening pad that's already worn out and required replacement. without replacing this pad, your shutter speed and exposures might be placed out of whack.

check out the Yashica Guy's web site, there's a pretty good article on servicing the viewfinder.

(sorry mods, i didn't realize the alternative word for "rooster" was a no-no. :embrass: )

you said..."oh, by the way, if you hear a distinct "clunk" when you **** the film advance lever, it means that there's a dampening pad that's already worn out and required replacement. without replacing this pad, your shutter speed and exposures might be placed out of whack."

And HELL YES I heard that CLUNK everytime i ****! Oh no...aiyah...liao liao...do you mean that 'Pad of Death' as mentioned in his site?

yeap...nx seed i'm coming...i hope to see you there too...mayb can assist in the repairs? no wonder the metering is not consistent.

hahaha... mods don't allow the word c**k.

yup, that's the pad of death. don't worry too much about it, i've used a couple of my yashicas with this ailment and they still take great pics. but i guess it be best not to leave it too long like this. (note to self, open up one of the beasts and see how to fix pad of death sickness.) :bsmilie:

i went to Camera workshop yesterday...asked the lady owner abt repairs to the yashica...all prices seems reasonable...and i did asked her abt the cluck sound, she said that it's ok, cos if there is no sound, then the pad has worn out...that made me go BLUR!?!? think need to ask someone who has the cam.

they got 2 kinds of flash for the yashica...one cost abt $20, the other cost abt $45. The $45 flash can swivel, thus making bounce flash possible. Did not get to see the flash cos the shop was already 90% CLOSE! :D
