Hello All,

Currently, I have a flatbed scanner can goes up to 1200dpi, and my printer can print at a resolution of 1440 dpi.

Which of the following will be have the best printout if I scan a slide and print wiht 4R paper?

1) Scan at a resolution of 1200dpi, scale is 1:1, and print using a lower resolution, to increase the image size,

2) Scan at a resolution of 1200dpi, with enlarging factor, and print using that resolution? (I am not sure what is the actual resolution the scanner will use, read from "A few Scanning Tips" that the scanner will use some interpolation method),

3) Scan at a lower resolution, with enlarging factor, so that it will use the maximum resolution, and print with that resolution?

If No.1 is a better choice, does that means that I need not to have a printer with such a high resolution, unless I am printing a scaned photo with a high resolution?

I have read through "A few Scanning Tips" and was quite lost inside there. Hope that somebody can enlighten me with the scanning.

Thanks.

Hi PhotoTime,

Printer and scanner "dpi" does not correspond the same way. It takes some explanation, but in short this is what you should do:

1) When you want to scan and reproduce the image at the same size, scan at 300 dpi. Purists usually like to scan slightly higher resolution (eg. 600 dpi) and resample it downwards via resizing in Photoshop for additional sharpness.

2) If you want to reproduce the image at a bigger size, then scan at 600 dpi for double the original size, or more if the image is bigger. So for a reasonably good 8R print from a 5R photo, you should scan at 600 dpi and resize in Photoshop.

3) Print at the highest resolution i.e 1440 dpi.
