What is the disadvantage/impact of setting the DR to 400%?
main disadvantage I would say is "opposite" your nick. :bsmilie: slow speed

and yes, the test is tempting me

Not much of White noise,

just 1.x frame per sec , normal is 3 frame per sec

The disadvantage is that the image looses contrast. A standard 24 bits Jpeg has 8 bits of colour info, you squeeze mor at the top and more at the bottom, and you loose some at the centre. That's the 400%.

At 100% it will be 'well spread out', and typical of most (if not all) other digital sensors. More contrast, but loosing either the top info or bottom info.

Top means brights/whites, bottom means darks/blacks.

Lot's of talk on this in the web, Yahoo or Google to learn more.

But to the eye, the 400% DR sure looks more pleasant and prints better. I LOVE Fuji colours.

you are right, but the important thing is that you can bump the details up to make it contains 0,0,0 and 255,255,255, but you can't bump something down to obtain information that are lost due to overexposure. ;)

I agree with the loss of contrast, which is why having 400% setting all the time is not a good thing, but it's there when it's needed.

lol...that chap invaded my thread and faked the test. no way a 300d can do that, cos a 10d cant :bsmilie:

but s3 and s5...great exposure latitude

I remember laughing like crazy when I first saw that... :D

So there's a "DR" setting on the s3/s5?
