Don't you think you are in the right forum :) Nonetheless, there aren't any good local skate forum around, sigh! Have used many brand of skates and I can tell you go and get the Salomon.

GO here http://trainer.salomoninline.com/others/products.asp

Though they are not cheap.

Since you mentioned 'the 1st time' I presume you know nuts about skates or buying skates?

Here are what you MUST do when buying skates (which is different from buying shoes, that is)

1) Get 1 to 1/2 size smaller than your usual shoe size.
2) Go for the aluminium frame ones, don't buy plastic frame
3) MOST importantly, make sure you TRY OUT physically in the shop to see if it fit you SNUGLY, if the sale staff refuse to let you try then don't buy from them. Make sure the skate is not too tight or loose, this is paramount in skating.

Like photography, you get what you pay for in skating equipment too, wonder how the word "Cheapskate" comes from? It makes a difference.

Hey Dawnknight!
I am thinking of learning too.
Whaere are you going for lessons???
:D

Royal Sporting House always has Ultra Wheels on sale. Approx $100++ is a fair price. Not much harder than learning how to cycle... do you actually need to pay $$$ for lessons?

Market rate for lesson is like $80-$120 for 4 lessons in beginner's level, which will teach you how to go straight, turn left/right and use of the heel brake.

It depends on what you want to learn, skating is very much much more technical than cycling.

hello there, wow great response, looks like i came to the right place as i heard clubsnap is a lively community...well i intend to learn the basics on my own, next door there is a 500m running track and basketball court ;-) maybe read up about blading as i progress along the way...oh yes, i just bought an SLR started some practicing; this place is fun, i must say :-)

Dawnknight,

you can try the outlet at East Coast next to CoffeeBean, the shop name is Hvper, IMHO that shop is much much better than Skateline in terms of prices and advice. :) got bad experience with skateline (after buying a couple of pairs of skates from them then I stopped buying from them liao) and I feel that their staffs' "friendliness" very faked too :thumbsd:
