Juz bought my Ricoh GXR + A12 Macro module from CP this afternoon!

My 1st impression:
1. Amazing picture quality
2. wonderful grip and lightweight
3. Slightly slower AF speed (macro) compared to my GRD3
4. Nice quiet shutter
5. A12 macro unit focus down to 7cm. GRD to 1cm. the lens barrier stick out quite abit unlike the GRD3
6. The B/W pics are so like the old school GRD1! Finally! :D

Any other Ricoh fans here in CS care to share their knowledge or P.O.V of this new little breed?

How is the AF in low light like?

Haven't had the chance to try shooting in low lighting condition as I am currently charging the battery. Will update you tml ! But even in normal lighting condition the AF is significantly slower than my GRD.

fei, where did u buy yours from?

I bought it at Cathay Photo. Heard they only brought in 3 sets. 1 set reserved and I got the other. left with 1 to go!

I must say that when the GXR was announced I was intrigued. Until now, I still can't decide if I like the concept or not! :dunno: I like the good IQ from a small camera, but I don't see the sense in buying a new sensor for every lens... Isn't it going to be really expensive to have a whole "collection" of lenses? i mean, I understand every sensor and lens combo is optimised for each other, but that also means you can't switch between 35mm and 50mm primes without having to change the sensor as well. Seems to me that most owners will only have 1 or 2 lenses/sensors and that's it.

That said, I'm very interested to see some pix. Pls post when you can. What I've seen from online reviews look very promising!

Ricoh has always been radical in their product development. But they do lead the market in their design philosophy. And there is always a loyal group of cult followers. The GR series & GRD series are successful in their field and have lead to similar products coming out from almost every successful digital manufacturer.

Hope their GXR takes off. If there is really a remarkable difference in IQ, some other manufacturers might want to follow suite, putting their lens together with the sensor and the back is just a LCD screen. :)

Ricoh's concept is good , just need to improve on the execution part ...
I would buy if they release an ultra wide with IR lens module :)

Was shooting ard cityhall area. You can view my pics at www.feiyou.blogspot.com and see no. 317 to 325.
most of the pics are shot wide open at F2.5 and ISO at 200 or 400.

My wishlist is a wide angle 21mm F2 APC size module, an interchangeable lens mount module (so I can use all my hexnon, nikon and M mount lenses! ) and a full frame constant F2.8 zoom module in the near future! ;p

With this new interchangeable module design in place, there can be unlimited possibilities for the future expansion of this product. I hope Ricoh select their path in a nice and slow pace and launch whatever the consumer really requires!

Cheers!

Hi,

From my personal p.o.v, other than the faster AF and the bigger Aperture F1.9 (GR3) v.s F2.5 (GXR A12) in GRD3, GXR wins all the rest to the last bit. Better IQ, more choices of future possible lens and attachments, APS-c sensor etc etc.

Both are wonderful cameras and I do own them. In the end I decided to sell away my GRD3 and get a D- Lux 4 instead!

Cheers!

Hoping for a wide angle lens for this one or bigger sensor GRD3 in short

GXR+A12 is not a "bigger sensor GRD3". far from it. They may look similar but are very different when in use due to the focusing mechanics differing in speed and the A12 being 50mm whilst the GRD3 is 28mm.

So far, the most annoying thing for me is not slow AF on GXR, but the frozen LCD screen during focussing. This frozen screen happens on both the LCD and the EVF!!!

GXR+A12 is not a camera for street photographers like GRD3. I got both, but I need to use GRD3 for street shots because GXR+A12 AF is too slow for moving subjects.

For still life pics, GXR+A12 pics are definitely better than GRD3. However, for street photography, GRD3 is much better. Its speed is unbeatable. The GRD3 lens is f1.9 fast The bottom line is: No point having a bigger sensor, if you miss the photo opportunity!

Admittedly, there is a Snap focus function (with pre-fix focus distance) in both GXR and GRD, however this takes alot of skill and distance-gauging to be able to use properly on the GXR as compared to GRD3 because of difference in DOF. On GRD3, due to the DOF size, snap focus usually captures an acceptably sharp image. But on GXR, the margin for error is higher and a small mistake usually leads to alot of blur.

However, if you are comparing GXR+A12 with the Leica X1, personally I will choose the GXR+A12 because at least GXR+A12 can manual focus better. There is a german website that do this direct comparison between X1 and GXR and they prefer GXR. Somemore, at least GXR in future I can use the GXR body with new module. For Leica X1, sure to depreciate in straight line wan.
