Has anyone ever bought any gear from camera shops in Guangzhou? Any to recommend? Or to be warned about? Thanks!
:)

There is a street with camera shops on both sides, many selling new stuff but also used cameras/lenses and accessories. I forgot the name of the street, but it is near one end of the river. I found it a very convenient place, and many shops give good service.......you need to bargain abit off course. One shop sells many pro used stuff, so be selective. Others have smaller selections, but you need to test them as usual.

I found the service very good, no need to feel afraid. Definitely better service than in some Orchard or Sim Lim shops! Some shops are big, and service is something like Cathay. You do need to speak mandarin, english not so good there, but I always had no problems using my hands :-)

Be sharp and check the boxes for printing errors... fake Nikon lenses are already out on the streets. I was shocked to see them. Goodness knows what other lens makers have fallen prey to these fakes. It is quite easy to spot with blotched printing on the boxes. On the lens itself, the silkscreened text has slight bleeding... so check carefully...

if youre looking for lomos, i know of a place. its on shang sia jiu (up down nine). quite a touristy place but head to the shopping center opposite the shopping center youd see the kung fu fast food restaurant (w the jacky chan lookalike logo). its quite a jappy place. on the basement level theres a small counter that sells lomo cameras. pity i cant tell you the price though. i went there twice during my trip there and the guy wasnt around. but just thought i'd let you know.

and let me know if theyre any cheaper! i'll ask my mom to buy back. :)

hope its useful.

any recommended shop in macau ?

hi hs,

is it cheaper to buy in Guangzhou or in HK ?

For accessories... buy from Maxsaver.. It's cheaper...
Although their website states that they ship from HK, their store is actually based in Guangzhou. So you can do COD with them.
