ehh, good idea sia! Divers' SEED!!!!

Not a bad idea.
Maybe someone should bring a laptop, then I bring some of my u/w pics to share

Also, I will be trying out my new 'everything' u/w setup this weekend, hope I dun screw it up too badly so I can share the pics online.

As for strobe rental, will not be feasible lah, then like that the rental will be quite ex lei

regulator set also expensive ma. though strobes are more expensive la. but i am sure got people willing to rent one... me! :D

what shall we do at a divers' seed?

What to do at a divers' seed? hee hee... talk u/w diving equip lah! ha ha... actually, what happens at the regular seeds? does everyone just talk about equipment? (never been b4):dunno:

If someone has a laptop, i can also share my digicam video clips!

Prob with most digicams (eg canon, sony) is that they have a 'preflash' which means that you need a special strobe that ignores the preflash and which only fires on the 2nd (actual) flash. The normal strobes can't work with this, which is a pity because it cld be possible to get a 2nd hand normal strobe quite cheaply.

However, I understand that the oly 5050's preflash can be switched off - lanxx, is that true?

Any rental of strobes will be expensive cos strobes are much more expensive than regulators and a lot more fragile. Still, i will also be willing to consider renting if there's a shop offering this!!!

Yes, the C5050 preflash can be turned off.
Just change the setting to SLAVE mode for the flash and vola!
no preflash. can be used in supermacro mode too, if u do not know.

There's some guy in germany who successfully make a digital adpater then can pick up the camera's preflash, cancel it and only use the 2nd flash to trigger conventional strobes. Think the device is around $400-$500 SGD. So, that i another alternative.
I no longer have his website address, but you can order 1 made for you from him.
;)

Sounds great! Can the preflash be turned off for all modes (eg. auto, program, aperture priority, etc)?

Beivied, we may have to investigate further as to whether the normal strobes which are made for u/w cameras can be slave fired via an optical cable. I think non-digi strobes are usually connected via electrical cable to the u/w cam and are hence TTL. Lanxx, you're the expert here - any ideas? :)

NO lah, not expert, still learning.
Slave mode for all modes? never really try, coz I only use A/S/M modes for all my phototaking only. Think will onlt work in A/S/M modes. Preset modes, dun think can.

Also, turning off preflash saves quite an amt of battery.
In theory, might be able to fire off the conventional strobes turning off the preflash, but no TTL. Our PT015 housing do not have a connector connecting the hotshoe to an exteranal source(sync cord), thus should not have TTL.

Also, since out housing cannot support sync cords, only optical cables are possible, we cannot use the conventional strobes.

wa kao, chimnology ... i must say that one thing that has really daunted me is flash! not just underwater strobe, even external flash unit i need to read again and again and again to digest .... so gang ko ah ...

Oh no... dun cry! ;)

U/w strobes for digicams are slave-fired - ie. there is an optical cable velcroed to the housing that transmits the digicam's own flash to the strobe which simultaneously fires. Therefore, the power of the strobe is not controlled by nor taken into account by the digicam's metering system.

Beivied, i'm sure the other CS "lau jiaos" can tell you more about land flashes and TTL - i'm not qualified!

Sigh - Lanxx, thanks for the info. Looks like no choice but to save for a digital strobe - cannot save $$ by buying a normal strobe and turning off preflash. Makes sense lah - normal strobes won't have the optical cable connector. ANy idea how the S&S YS90 compares with your Inon? Power, coverage angle, cost?

i can save slowly~ for a strobe la. cos my diving skills are not even steady yet, let alone taking good pictures. one dollar a day enough? :D

well buddy, you've got almost 3 years to hone your diving skills then! :D

Yeah, cannot give a proper review as I have not used my INON yet. Though I have used the YS-90DX a few times.

YS-90DX:
3 sec recycle time
90x 105 coverage(rectugular coverage)
300 flashes with NiMH batts
22GN
Full manual strobe, with TTL support
can support sync cord

INON D180:
1.5c recycle time
100x100 coverage(twin blubs, giving a superior coverage, circular)
600 flashes with NiMH batts
19GN
Comes with in-built focus light
Lighter, smaller
It's a semi-auto strobe, no TTL.
cannot support sync cord

Price wise almost the same.
