Hi,

I'm helping a good friend source for a hi-speed video camera.

Basically, looking for a very minimum of 320 pixels res, but preferably 640 and speeds of 4,000 fps or a minumum of 2,000 fps.

Not looking at high-end cameras, but something which could be used for educational purposes and can be afforded by a club or small organisation.

The obvious lower option would be the Casios, but looking for something faster/better in terms of image quality and also durability/reliability, that won't break the bank, which isn't very large ayway.

What would you guys recommend? Links to reviews or discussion would be helpful as well.

Thanks in advance! :)

Could anyone recommend another forum or link where I might be able to get some information?

The frame rate and resolution requirements you state are quite high end. The Casios I have seen cannot do what you ask. May I know what Casio model are you looking at?

Also, what budget do you have in mind for this?

Options would be good.

Right now I/we have little or no idea of what's available, except the low-end Casio P&S with 1,000/1,200 low res frame rates.

Is there anything at the specs I mentioned, or slightly lower?

I guess CS might not the right place to ask seeing there's only one response so far, but would be greatful for a recommendation / link to another forum / place. If more comfortable, please PM me.

Thank you.

I've rented 1 high speed cam for a shoot before. It isn't cheap renting one, what more buying!?! the price tag came to more than 1k+. Shot a few min of footage at 1000fps @ 24bit 720p size was in excess of a terabyte or 2!

Higher fps cam like the phantoms isn't gonna be any cheaper than your professional DV cameras.
Also know that these don't come with ANY lenses and storage medium.. they capture straight to a laptop/computer so a fast external raid storage will need to be purchased also. It will easily cost you 30k just for 1 system..

The nearest line I can think of are the Red cameras and I don't think they can do anywhere near 500fps.
Maybe your school wants to buy stock footage instead?
If you want to rent, can check with chris from Studio on 3rd Ave
