Hi guys, i just gotten my M2 with self timer today. Went to cameraquest to check out the serial number. But the serial number appears that the cam should be one without a self timer. Is that a fake? The shutter sounds louder then my yashica GSN. I suppose Leica should have a quiet shutter. And theres some problem with the self timer. I need some advice. Thanks!

The GSN uses a leaf shutter which is infinitely quieter than a focal plane shutter even compared one as smooth as a leica so don't be surprised there. As for the serial no. The previous owner might have had one without self timer and then sent it in to leica to get it modified/fitted with a self timer later on. If it works, nothing to worry about. There aren't to my knowledge any fake leica M2s around so if you do have one (you wish ah!), its probably worth even more money.

Just go out and shoot with it man. I have one and its my last leica RF. A well serviced one is easily as good as the latest MP. I sold my M7, M6 and MP but could never find it in me to sell the M2. Its a good cam with uncluttered frame lines.....

hey thanks! I love the M2! But i think most prob i will send it for a CLA. Has anyone here sent his stuff to Youxin ye before? Im considering sending it to him but im worried about the turn over time.

he's got good reviews and apparently one of the fastest turnovers. I'm in the uk so i send my stuff to CRR Luton. Freight and custom duties to the US/Canada just don't justify the savings for me.

curious
how much does a CLA cost in spore?

Im not sure about CLA in sg, but i manage to contact youxin ye. The CLA will cost 120USD, the shipping fee to him is included. So is 120USD + shipping back to sg. I feel its quite reasonable.

That is cheap. Mine sent to DAG in the USA costs USD 290 for normal full CLA, excluding delivery charges to and fro. I sent it to DAG due to good feedback that he has from others, although Sherry Krauter is another one. With DAG, one better tell him of any extras one wants, like a new viewfinder, etc., or he just does the normal full CLA, without asking if one wants this or that ...

At any rate, full CLA for an old camera is definitely a wise move, especially to ensure shutter speeds are proper, as well as the rangefinder. The CLA certainly gave a better feel, a sense that all mechanisms are well-lubricated ... best of all, it gives peace of mind that your "antique" camera has been diagnosed/certified in good order and is working like new.

p.s. I wouldn't send my Yashica Electro GSNs for CLA, though, too cheap anyway. I would rather "CLA" them myself - changing light seals, cleaning leaf shutter, viewfinder, etc.

USD 290! its really too much for me, i could get a CV lense. Hee. Im glad i found youxin ye, but im still thinking when i will send it over to him since i just got my beloved M2. Haa.

Oh btw, Clubgrit, is there any way that i could clean my GSN myself? The view finder seems to be abit hazy n blueish. As you said, its not really worth a CLA.

Well, I once asked a local camera repairer/dealer here how much it will cost to clean a Leica viewfinder. He said SGD 125 (but when he saw what I wanted cleaned, he said no need to waste money) ! So might as well send for full CLA, cleaning is part of it ...

There are a couple of guys on the net showing how to repair whatever can be repaired on a Yashica by ordinary users. Goggle for "Yashica Guy" or "Matt Yashica GSN" ... their tutorials on replacing the light seals are good. It doesn't seem too difficult to open up the top to clean the viewfinder. Haven't found the need to do it on mine yet, I worked on replacing the light seals instead.

My viewfinders are also bluish, I think it's naturally dim. To quote someone - "I have cleaned the internals of the viewfinder on my GSN, which improves the contrast a bit. But, by design, the viewfinder is on the dim side (blue/gray tinted) to contrast with the yellow rangefinder patch.".

The dim view is pathetic compared to a clear Leica viewfinder, which is by itself inferior compared to a Hassy rangefinder prism viewer (due more to the size). The Yashica's is more flare-resistant, though, why can't Leica get theirs flare-free with the stock viewfinder ? The Yashica shutter click is definitely quieter than a Leica and less vibration, but a Leica with a soft shutter release is almost as quiet. I did add a soft shutter release on the Yashica, it helps a bit, but not the same degree as on a Leica. Cocking the Yashica is noisier, though.

Despite these nitpicks, the Yashica takes very high quality pics, it has its own charm, definitely worth more than its going price these days if pic quality was the only gauge (and if one can get a piece in full working condition).

Heday, what batteries do you use on the Yashica ? I can't find the 4LR44, or PX28A so far, so I use a CR123 + 2 LR44 stacked on it, which makes 6 volts ...

Thanks clubgrit for the information. I may probably leave my GSN as it is. Its my first rangefinder, it will be so sad if i spoil it. :bheart: Do you know where i can get cheap soft shutter release locally? I just hate to order things from overseas.

As for the batteries i use 4 LR44 + 15 one cent coins + a metal paper clip. ;p Its a real trouble to change the batteries, but anyway the batteries can last quite awhile. :)

I don't know locally ... someone is getting mass orders at the B&S section, I think ...

Thanks, I just managed to find the 4LR44 at Konota an hour ago, I couldn't find them at the convenience stores or even Home-Fix ... Works fine, I use it with a "Yashica Electro 35 Battery Adapter for G, GS, GT, GSN, GTN, MG-1" which I got from eBay. A CR123 + 2 LR44 works too, no need for coins or paper clips ...
