Hi bros,

I am quite new to video so please pardon me if my question is numb.
I am trying to transfer video tape to PC as follows:
- through firewire IEEE 1394 port, connect to DV port of my camcoder (a bit old, panasonic NV-GS11).
- using Sony Vegas pro, setting on camcoder (only setting i can find DV Out: ON)
- Try capture setting in Sony Vegas at both 29.97 (NTSC) and 25 (PAL) frames/s

The problem is when i playback the avi file captured i can see the block around the edge of moving objects. The faster the object move, the clearer and very annoying blocks appears around egde.

What may cause that problem? Do you have any clues and solution to solve this. Thanks a million.

heheee

i can answer this one
Try using windows movie maker
select option to DV tape ( not the recommended best for PC )

then all the blockiness and etc will go away
remarkable how good those old camcorder looks

:D

Apart from some people who capture MPEG video from their memory stick, normally you will only see blocks if you capture while the camcorder is in fast-forward (or fast-reverse) mode. If you are using Vegas for capture, you can control the camcorder using the deck controls (play, pause, stop, etc). Use these controls to go into play mode, and then click on the Record button. Capture a short clip and then see how it plays back.

Thanks bros for your quick reply.

@lightrules: The funny thing is my movie maker can recognize the camcoder, even can use the play, stop and pause to control the playback in camcoder when configuring the camera. However, when i try next steps to capture then it pops up the error message "The video device cannot be used at this time because there has been an error when starting the device". Using Sony Vegas and Ulead Studio still can recognize and capture howerver the results are blockiness thing arround egdes for both software. Btw am quite new so dun know where to select option to DV tape in Window Movie Maker. Just click on the Capture from video device and follow the wizard.

@jaegersing: Normally i just test to capture a shot clips from tape (1-2 mins). Play using the deck controls first and click on the capturing button. That got the blockingness thing.

try to help
i had experienced with the block on the edge while captured the video
the annoying blocks more clear when captured moving object
in my case..its also happened to me
but after finish captured and i try to play it on media player
the annoying blocks its all gone
just try to finish capturing the video and try playback on media player
if the blocks is still remain
it might be trouble with the capture setting

Thanks bros for your quick reply.

hi
this is blind leading the blind
try to delete some space on your harddrive...it seems if the space is too small it may not allow you to transfer.....you are almost there......some one else might be able to help you....
i am too new to this .....

ydnerendy has a good point - spmetimes the blockiness is only on the preview window and the captured video is fine. Would be good to hear back from patomilan about where he is seeing the blocks - preview only, or also on timeline?

hi bros,

the blockiness appears both during capturing and playingback using windows media players or any other player i tried. So far, i haven't found any solution yet. even dun know how to let window movie makers be able to capture. Still using the Sony vegas or Ulead.

There is probably a capture setting quality problem with your Sony Vegas. Try adjusting the settings to a higher one. You should be using 25fps PAL, look for a default MINI DV setting

Is the blockiness caused by interlacing? (just a guess)

I'm a Sony Vegas Pro 8.0 user, you must see the motion scanlines instead of blockiness when previewing interlaced video via Sony Vegas.

In your video preferences (Options>Preferences>Preview Tab), Set your pixel aspect ratio to Automatic (your camera must match settings, but usually Vegas automatically detects your device i.e. PAL VCR output= PAL PC capture) and you may have "Base DV decoding" feature turned on. It means you'll see basic resolution of DV input when previewing (not full detail) and it captures full detail when recording to PC. Also, some DV cams do have really bad recording with fast motion images.

If you're going to convert PAL to NTSC, do it during editing stage but not during the capture, because you may end up with choppy footage with out of sync audio.
