Question about Leica

Hey guys,
I am really interested in buying a Leica and starting of my journey with a camera which doesn't break your back.
Well, I honestly am amazed by the works put into the M9, but budgeting problems would see it as a step just too far.
Albeit with its issues the M8 is a great choice from what ive heard.
But where can i possibly get a M8 from?
and what about the colour issues? How do i fix that? or what do i need to do?
or is it actually a good option to look at the 8.2? but similarly where can I get that?
Or shall i break the bank once and for all and get an M9?
Just another quick question about lenses, i would think i would stick with either a 50mm or 35mm but what is the lens to get for either? and does the body really affect the choice of lens?
Sorry for my all my questions. Help will greatly be appreciated.
Thanks, Amrit

They are both good cameras that delivers excellent IQ. Both have reliability issues (espeically with the shutters). The auto white balance isn't great indoors, just make sure you shoot RAW so you can PP it.

Remember, they are digital cameras. In subsequent years their value will drop.

If your M9 pruchase will not help you get the money/pictures/etc you want, and you are purely shooting as a hobby; I suggest you shouldn't even bother with the M9.

The M8 has a 1.3x crop, so if you are a short lens shooter, it's a real issue.

sorry to OT, no new posts from enzokoh recently?

Hey I'm an M9 user =) I can honestly tell you that it is a very good camera and probably enjoy the easy of use of this camera. But I bought an M9 as I was a heavy film shooter so M9 made financial sense. 6 months 15 k shots

I agree with the reliability part cos my M9 is in solms now.... but I am rough with my camera...

One more thing is that an M9 is the tip of the iceberg.
very soon you will want the best lenses and lenses with character.

Honestly the M9 can still break your back.. The camera itself is full metal so its heavy.
and if you carry fast lenses... they weigh a lot.
A 5d mark 2 with the 35 L is about the same weight as my M9+ VC351.2

I looked at your pictures and they are very close to the object so 0.7m min focus might be an issue for you.

The type of camera you decide on depends on also what you shoot and how you shoot.

I suggest that you get a good prime lens and shoot with your 7d.

PM me if you need help or want to know more

Yalor i miss enzo questions. Recently i saw enzo sell an m8 in buysell. I didnt know he got m8 lei

It is true camera body is only tip of iceberg. U need to budget for lenses. Lenses are addictive and very expensive

Bro, frankly some of your questions gave me the impression that you just wanted to be spoon fed. It's fine to ask questions here and most of us are more than willing to share our experiences and knowledge. However, this is still a public forum and with any public forums, be prepared to be flamed.

I've always make it a point to google for my queries before I post here. Ask questions, but ask educated questions. Pls don't let the past experience take away the joy of visiting this forum. Now that you have your RF gear with you, go out and shoot and learn the joy of photography.

Thanks guys for all the encouragement. After the incident i try not to post questions and try to source it online or google if i encounter any problems. And also im enjoying the fun of RF.I never knew taking picture of my family can be so much fun.And i also finally understand how hard it is to shoot my active boy now.By the time i focus on him,he has already move to another place but i like the challenge.

let's not discourage the spirit of learning... be willing to share in building a community of learning. but as a first stop, google and wiki are often good places to start...

'nuff said on that... pls revert back to the TS's question on the Ms... ;)

Hey guys, sorry for not coming back for so long in the midst of exams haha.
well thanks for all your help so far, really appreciate it. just wanted to understand some things
does the m8.2 have the same colour problem like m8? * black becomes purple
and what is a good starter lens, meaning 35mm vs 50mm 1.4s?
and where is a good place to shop for leica stuff at good prices? :)
and whats the cost of m8.2?
Thanks a lot guys :)

Yes m8.2 still has the same color problem you described

35 or 50 will probably start a whole new debate .. This one is personal.. I believe there are equal number on both camps ..

Good prices Leica stuff :dunno: hahaha .. But seriously .. Go to Peninsula. Thee are a few shop there you can get your poison ..

Second hand price for m8.2 is from 4.5 k depending on conditions

Happy shopping
Cheers

Alright thanks
And what about m9 prices?
and the prices of the lenses?
anything important to watch out for if i intend to search the second hand market?
Thanks :)

You can get a rough market price by doing a search for Leica in the buy & sell section. Prices at Ben Photo/P&G will also give you a figure in mind.

Yes, M8.2 does have the magenta problem as well, therefore, UV/IR filters still needed.

You can get Leica stuff here in the B&S forum, Rangefinderforum.com & ebay. You gotta have a figure in mind for the diffent versions of Leica lenses to know if its a good deal or not.

For lenses 35 or 50, no point discussing really, everyone has different opinions on it, imho, really up to individual, best you try it out yourself on the camera.

check ebay, you can see the prices of all different versions & their prices. Should have a rough idea in mind when you see them all.

M9, there was a couple of sale in the B&S forum, check it out, quick search should bring it up.

lenses the usual, fog/haze/fungus/smooth focusing like any other lenses. Same for body, for digital, check LCD for dead pixels, RF alignment etc.

Wah lao weh this month LFI magazine november issue got an article on m8. Leica try to prove that the m8 color problem is not a flaw but an 'unusual feature' that makes BW pictures look BETTER. Its the feature article on this month issue!

Leica trying to promote m8 izzit. So strange

Just wondering what actually is RF alignment?
