Queries about 7D HD Recording

I was just wondering whether i can shoot 7D in 4:3 format other than 16:9 format, someone do enlighten me please.

It's either 16:9 or 3:2. There's a 640 mode. Which is 640 X 480 ( 3:2 )

to add on to this thread, can we also find out how can we burn the video file into a normal DVD video disc? The format dont allow us to open up in window dvd maker or window movie maker, someone who tried making their dvd video disc can share the knowledge?

You need to convert the file to a more widely recognised format. Edius and Sony Vegas can do it, not sure about any freebie solutions at the moment.

7D records the video in 16:9 HiDef. Output in H264 codec. Window Movei Maker/DVD Maker seems to be able to open in Standard Definition (SD). Minimally, you need a paid software to open/edit it. Cheapest I am aware of is Sony Vegas Studio which you can buy at Challenger. Otherwise you could download a 30day trial and see whether it is suitable for your use.

With every conversion process, quality drops. Best is you convert it to MKV format for storage and then create a copy to edit it in Vegas and then render it into WMV format for PC or you could output to a DVD direct.

Thks for your valuable information. Currently I am using xilisoft video converter convert the clip to wmv or mpg format. But there are too many options on this software and I am not sure If quality will be similar to what we shoot from the cam.

You only mentioned burning to DVD, and it is inevitable that you have to do the conversion to DVD format files. Of course you will get a quality loss when you go from HD source to SD target. But the output should still look pretty good.


If you want to edit the footage before making the DVD you can convert to an intermediate codec like Cineform or Canopus HQ, and you will not see much or any quality loss. But the downside is that the file sizes are huge. Converting to another highly compressed format like MKV is not really ideal for editing, but the files will be much smaller. You can always try with a short sample, converting it with different codecs and comparing the final results on DVD. If the results are acceptable using MKV then just use that.

If you can select an MPG2 format that is DVD-compatible and with a bitrate of 8Mbps CBR, that's probably the best quality you can expect from an HD to SD conversion. Going to DVD via WMV or other format will just give you more degradation. You should only do this if you have good reason, for example if you need to do a lot of heavy editing or chroma-keying, it is good to use an intermediate codec with a larger colourspace.
