Hi

Im a newbie in DSLR world. Im a PnS ( point and shoot)user. By reading this forum it helps me to have a better understanding on DsLr Cameras. Thanks to all the members. Manage to pickup few tips and i have decided on CANON 400d. ;)

But now, im stuck with another dilemma: been to a Shop in Peninsula Plaza, the sales person quote me Canon400d / with standard kit@$1156/cash with a Bag, tripod, xtra-Batt( 3rd Party) , 1 2G Cf card plus a WARRANTY.
Seriously its really a gd deal, compared to other shops in Sim Lim SQ.( some shops quote me $850/w Gst for NO WARRANTY or close to $1150 with 1 2G CF card as freebie)Should i grab the offer @ Peninsula Shop or wait till PC fair..?
Pls share ur views and comments.

Thanks

If you care, there's a Canon 450D now (the latest version). Just not available in Singapore yet :( So don't know if you want to wait for it.

The memory card is a Canon islandwide free gift (end 25 feb)

If I remember right, I got quoted $1050 incl gst and card for the kit a couple of weeks ago. So that's $106 for the bag, tripod and 3rd party spare battery. Do you think it is worth? IMHO, if the bag and tripod are good, I'd take the offer. I never tested with Canon, but Nikon D80 original battery is far better than 3rd party battery (last longer, and shots are brighter). You get what you pay for. Regarding warranty, what kind of warranty? Can take to Canon for repair? Or take back to shop? Personally I don't mind take back to shop type if I trust the shop. Either way it gets fixed anyway... but I know a lot of people would mind.

*The $1050 might be possible to bargain a bit, I didn't try because I don't like to bargain and the shop that quote me usually give pretty good prices anyway.

The right thing to do is, pick up the phone, and call the shops on the list...

Mention that you are checking prices, and they will give you a good price. Ask clearly all the freebies (dont ever assume anything)

Get the fella's name

Go down and buy the cheapest.

The bag and tripod are most likely left overs from an old promotion by canon (For me, i got a 1GB CF2, and a tripod, and the bag was also an option if i didn't want the tripod)

A very important point to note is that the free CF is an ULTRA II card, a expensive one. If the shop gives you a cheap kingston (not saying kingston bad, saying cheaper one), then you are getting conned. A 3rd party battery should only cost less than 40 bucks at most.

I'm going to guess that the "other shops" is Orient Photo?

Just got my 400D from Alan Photo-Funan. Body with the 17-85mm IS USM lens for $1765nett/cash got the same freebies as the canon promo which are 2GB sandisk ultra2 and battery grip. Also went over to Cathay-Peninsula but the guy i asked gave that "i don't care to attend to you" face when asked bout the camera, and also quoted me higher @ $1799 with just 2GB card.
Believe you can get cheaper from say SLS or even MS Color, but too lazy to travel there. =)

Does the 1156 price tag include the 18-55 kit lens? Or just the body alone?

If you are a first-time user of a DSLR you will definitely need the stock lens.

For me, the tripod and 3rd party battery aren't so important. Consider the size of the camera bag, and double check the brand of the CF card. GavinTing's advice is by far the most sound. Double-check and triple check and cross compare prices before you make your purchase.

Also, check for the warranty card, make sure that you're buying a local set and not a grey set. If the sales person recommends any other lens, saying its on offer, purchase-to-purchase and its cheap, you might want to be more careful as to what you're buying. If you've never heard of it, then don't buy. There are people who have bought a wide-angle adapter thinking they bought a lens better and sharper than the stock lens.

As for PC fair, you are unlikely to get a very much better deal. Maybe more freebies which you won't need. Don't forget you will still need a dry cabinet and maybe an LCD screen protector.

Of course, most importantly ask to test the camera. If the salesperson doesn't agree, leave the shop.

For me, I always go down to shop like MS. Color or Cathay Photo for a peace of mind. They won't 'cheat' people, and their price is always lower than others. I recommend you going there instead of going to Penisula shop. ;)

My 2cents :D

Hello,

I would also like to know how much the 400D goes for in Singapore.

I live in the Philippines and i was wondering if i could save some $ if i get my dad to it for me in Singapore.

Currently, gray market kits here cost around SGD 1170.75 to 1258.12, including camera bag and memory card.

Can anyone post a good price and place where i could purchase the kit? the cheaper, the better :)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

I think the best for me is to wait for the coming IT fair in March:thumbsup::D. Who knows by then canon 450d will be out:dunno:..Maybe the price of canon 400d will be slightly lower :bsmilie:Or i will be tempted to purchase 450d??
