Dust is inevitable, especially with zooms... even though the newer lenses kind of "take cares" of that to a certain degree.
As to vignetting &/or light falloffs, it's also almost inevitable with almost all "old lenses" with the D3 and the coming D700 but is seldom bothersome with the better lenses and stopping down does help.
For that matter, even the newer AFS 24-70mm f2.8 exhibits dark corners wide open. Not sure though whether the in-built vignetting control of the D3 (&/or D700) could mask the light falloffs a little.
A fellow forum member has actually kindly tested some of his lenses with the D3. His nick starts with the letter I.
