Dust is inevitable, especially with zooms... even though the newer lenses kind of "take cares" of that to a certain degree.

As to vignetting &/or light falloffs, it's also almost inevitable with almost all "old lenses" with the D3 and the coming D700 but is seldom bothersome with the better lenses and stopping down does help.

For that matter, even the newer AFS 24-70mm f2.8 exhibits dark corners wide open. Not sure though whether the in-built vignetting control of the D3 (&/or D700) could mask the light falloffs a little.

A fellow forum member has actually kindly tested some of his lenses with the D3. His nick starts with the letter I.

Seek and you will find.

with 70-300 f2.8, it is time to come up with an excuse that you need a new bag. Also, need to set aside some $$ to pay for gym membership :)

Hey, do you think we are more muscular than any other hobbyist? Since our biceps are trained with weights but made of glass? :bsmilie:

OR

we are among the top patient list who have backache.....

Well.. i do think that chances for a couple of new FX lenses are very high. 70-200 F2.8 VR or even 70-300 f2.8 VR is very likely i think. I can see Nikon pushing some new lenses and probably replaced the holy trinity all together.. The 17-35mm is kinda replaced by the 14-24mm and the 28-70mm by the 24-70mm and thus i won't be surprise if a new 70-200 or 70-300 is next in line.

70-300 f2.8 VR ......... very difficult.

more like to see AFS for 50mm/f1.4, 85mm/f1.4, 135mm/f1.4 etc etc...

The part that don't want to see is the price....

i doubt they will bother with AFS or VR on these 1.4 primes... although they did release the 60mm macro lens..

hmmmm.... double hmmmm..... was holding back and waiting to see if any of these prime will launch AFS.... hmmmm.... :dunno:

60mm Macro was, IMO, for the manual overide function for the focus, something that a macro lens needs.

I think they will update the primes to AFS.

It's the next logical step in their (missing) roadmap.

From Nikonrumours:

"The 70-200mm will be replaced in September by a newer version, the 'N' series"

"I can confirm the rumor about the new 70-200.
I had a lunch with the vice-president from Nikon Imaging a few months ago and he confirmed to me that there
will be a new 70-200 with nano crystal coating later this year.
So I guess (yes, only guess) that the new one will be presented just before or on Photokina.
From what I know, the lens will become available in the 4th quarter of this year."

I've been expecting them to replace the 70-200 because the current one doesn't perform well at the corners on FX.

We don't have to rely on those rumours websites anymore.

Just trust that they (Nikon) will be going about replacing almost all their "previous generation lenses".

Yes.. They could very well abandon the F mount because the diameter is imposing a limit to what they can do with it. In this aspect, Canon made the right decision in adopting a larger diameter EF mount with full electronic coupling to replace the FD mount nearly 20 years ago. Canon also makes video cameras so they must have been aware of the optics requirements if the were ever to put a digital sensor in place of film in the future.
