You don't have to follow the pros in everything they do...anyway, try to choose nice looking ginko nuts.

Btw, Pros apply makeup to the food. Adjust the position of the ginko nuts, wipe away any distracting stuff (lingering fluid?) from the bowl, spray some stuff to make it shiny, add utensils, nicer background (table cloth!).

Also work on your lighting. Shining warm light on yellow food tends to oversaturate the yellows. You might decide to put something dry ice/whatever to simulate some water vapur like smoke trails, this dessert is served hot right?

yes, it is all just in the presentation, no need to use the "real food" don't cook them if neccessay to make them look good...

just use un cooked nuts and stuff.... maybe even using tap water will make it look better.....

I always see my family members peeling something from the ginko nuts before they good...

And try to capture some steam or something..

Hm... feel you need more variations of light and shadow in your pic-- to give a sense of plumpness, roundness and volume rather than a flat gruel. Also, the light seems too yellow, especially as the nuts are yellow. You should also use a different coloured plate. Perhaps have more nuts too to give the sense of a generous helping.

use a red/green plate. and shoot 30-45 degrees from horizontal.

close up at a low angle. you don't have to see the whole bowl in the picture. remember when you shoot food, you're giving it some kind of fame and glory, and when people look at it, they must feel extremely turned on and wants to have a piece/bite/bowl or taste of it. Honest stuff can be used, but the lifespan of the subject is so super short you only have a minute to work on it. Most of the time I work with honest stuff, and it takes a very good stylist to do so whom I'm extremely lucky to have.

Try borrow some product shots book and see how the REAL pro do it. Else, u can go visit some food courts in Singapore with your digicam, then snap their product shots and get some idea.

Honestly, the two pics (original and the tweek one) don't attract me. The tweek's pic looks like a overnight food...

Try what laokayu suggested by adding spoon, flowers and some deco to the pic. The lightning doesn't have to be all bright. U can shoot from one angle and have light from an angle too. U can also have two pics, one showing from top, one from side view.

The shot angle is pretty normal for display purposes, all the arty fartsy oblique angles work best for advertising in magazines and papers etc.

However, with that said, use a bowl that contrasts well with the food, in other words a red or blue bowl, with or without a yellow or gold band around the top.

Adjust your lighting angles to block reflections from the barley mixture and as others have already pointed out, pick big fat nuts as it's an important psychological selling point.
