Thanks for the offer lordpain. *wince* I might ask for help when I DO get a printer. =)

One thing I'm worried about though: I once saw a video clip of how inkjets clean their nozzles - by squirting ink out into a containment chamber. Do they still do that? I was quite horrified at that... haha! Coz it was like, SO MUCH INK!!! And if they DO do that, then, is there any way to reduce the amount of ink wasted? Leaving the printer on?

3in1c, if I do get the printer and getting printable CDs, I would most probably be getting those with brands like Imation or Sony. Or probably ask for recommendations of no-name ones from the 6th floor of Sim Lim that corner shop. They've got a pretty impressive display of printed CDs... =)

Inkjets still use the same method... for Epson they have an absorbent layer which you need to replace... at $150...

Regarding the issue of asking the printer not to waste so much ink, its impossible. The printers are programmed to periodically clean their nozzles, or charge their ink if a new cartridge is installed. So, the more colors your printer has, the more ink it wastes.

... And for those people who are interested in getting a new printer in the IT show, heres a clip to scare you for the cost of inkjets. Printing at home is not cheap, like I said, its very rewarding when you master it.

=) Enjoy Guys.

Yes! THAT's the video I saw before! Haha! Damn scary sia... But what I was wondering if leaving a printer always on will reduce the cleaning cycle. My impression is that when you turn it on, it'll do a cleaning upon initializing, so if u leave it on, maybe it won't clean too often?

Wah... $150 to replace, I might as well buy a new printer. Unless I dismantle it myself and remove the absorbent layer and replace it with sponge. Hahaha!

Well, IT Show is over and I haven't bought a new printer. I guess I can wait for abit and see if prices drop even further, or if color LASER technology improves even more so we get a color gamut close to inkjets. Why can't they have a 6 color LASERjet? Haha!

Colour laser is acutally very expensive to maintain as well... I have FujiXerox C525a... Each colour cartridge costs $193, can print up to 4000 pages at 5% coverage... Each time I buy one set of CMYK, it costs me almost $800!

You have not factored in the cost of the drum plus the fuser... these wear out too!

Well, it is not cheap maintaining a printer. You might really factor in all the costs. If you'd like to just print some, going to a photo developing studio would be cheaper. If you really just like to have the control over your whole workflow, there is a price to pay. Haha, ask me out for tea, or you can visit me. I can show you how to actually DIY all these. I actually strip printers for a hobby as well.
