I took the photo in a park near my permanent home -- in the East Bay Area in a crummy little city named Livermore. (it's about 45 minutes north of San Jose and 45 minutes east of San Francisco.) I'm a university student -- I study Computer Engineering -- at Cal Poly Univ. on the central coast of California (San Luis Obispo). It was taken with my Maxxum (Dynax, if ye will), vertical grip, Sigma 50-500 lens, Fuji NPZ 800, vertical grip, all mounted to a heavy tripod. I was carrying it around trying to get pictures of wildlife in a largish outdoor park about 2 miles from my house. I hand held the whole unit and pointed the lens at her -- she didn't realize it was 50mm all the way back and freaked out, thinking I'd be taking some random ultra zoomed in picture of her face. I insisted that she just hold still for a moment and got the picture you see there. (PS: though we're still good friends, we aren't dating anymore)
I scanned it with a Minolta Dimage Elite II scanner (or it may have been a Nikon Coolscan 4000 (I hope not, for my Minolta is a ton better scanner...just not as high DPI.)) I dodged and burned a bit, put it on my webpage, etc. On a whim I sent it off to MinoltaUSA when I found they had a contest. You can just upload digital images via their web form. At the time I had no method for obtaining output, and I refuse to have other people make prints for me. Ugh.
I haven't figured out yet how they're going to award the prize yet -- I'm pretty sure it will be cash, though. And if only they knew me, they could be certain that it would end up going towards camera equipment...sheesh. ($100 USD would perhaps pay for my last film order =\ )
But my next purchases will probably be a 20mm 2.8 and a 28mm 2.8 from Minolta. (I've since replaced the 50-500 with a 200 2.8 APO and a 100 2.8 Macro (both OEM from Minolta). The 50-500 was too contrasty and soft at 500 for my liking. I believe I've turned into a prime lens snob.
