Ovation 1Tb Hard Disk: Error Msg "The Media is Write Protected"

Hi guys,

Anyone experienced this problem with your hard disk before? I think it all started when I clicked cancel 2 minutes into cutting some 50Gb worth of files out of the HDD and it hanged. I thought it was reversing the process so I waited for a long time before I finally decided to restart my com. I've tried to de-hang it by restarting windows explorer and ending task but to no avail. :sweat:

Now I can only copy files out of it. I can't cut or delete anything in it because of the write protection. :cry:

There is also no "Security" tab when I right clicked > properties it to change the permissions.

What should I do? Anyone ever had such a problem before? Any advice to share? Best if you also own a Ovation. :sweat:

Hi Lemontree,

Maybe you have thought of this before but not wanting to do it unless it's a last resort.

How about transferring the files to another harddisk and reformat the Ovation ?

haha! I'm laughing with tears in my eyes! Exactly what I am doing now! :sweatsm: But super sian cuz the backing up of my stuff amounts to almost 700Gb and that'll take 2 days to transfer! :sweatsm: haha!

I can understand what you are going through. I experienced something similar when my harddisk crashed.

Had to download the entire wedding footage from the tapes and re-start editing from scratch :sweat:

If you're backing up a 1 TB worth of stuff, it will be worth investing in an eSata system. USB 2 is too slow for that.

Haha! I've been there too. I'm trying to figure out how to enable my SATA sockets on my motherboard. There're like six of them with 2 currently in use by my internal HDD and combo drive.

I've already plugged the eSATA PCI card in. Connected up my HDD to it but when I've switched it on, nothing happens. Went online to read about it and read that I've to enable my SATA sockets on my motherboard through my BIOS but I've not been succeeding in trying to enter my com's BIOS setup.

I'm running 2 Hewlett-Packard Core 2 Quad Core systems and can't seem to enter my bios with all the keys pressed like F11, F1, F12, F8, F5... :bsmilie::sweat:

Any advice, vince?

Hehe I had problems enabling the eSata port on my motherboard too, which was why I went out and spent S$80 or so to buy a 2 port eSata PCI card and it was just plug and play from then on

I see..but what's the difference between a 2-port and a single port PCI Card? Can't a single port eSATA PCI card be a plug and play device too? hmm.... :think:

By the way, where did you purhase your PCI card at for $80? exactly which shop?

The smallest number of ports that I could find for eSata is 2 ports. Previously they only had 4 port cards available. If there's single port, then go ahead and use that.

I got it from Storage Studio at SLS.

it's a PCI card that has a cable. the cable is meant to be plugged into my motherboard's eSATA input.

From what you describe, it is not a PCI card, but merely an expansion breakout plate (ie the back of the plate (facing inside) plugs to your motherboard's eSata and the front of the plate (facing outside) is where you plug the HDD in.

That is what I suspected as I never heard of any HDD casing bundling an eSata card before (the card costs more than the casing)

Hence, if you cannot enable eSata on the MB, the breakout plate will not work. Go get a standalone PCI card for this. S$80plus only.

oh yayaya! Now it rings a bell! A PCI card is the one that slots in and u have to push a button out and in again in order to get it out! haha! left poly for too many yrs liao I guess..laz time I used a PCI was in poly...keke...:bsmilie:

Hahha nono, what you are talking about is a PCMCIA card, not a PCI card.

For your case, if you do not need to slow the "card" into a slot in the motherboard, but merely attaches to the casing via a screw, and the only interface with the motherboard is a sata cable, then what you have is merely a back plate.

And yes, if that is the case, you need to enable the esata on your MB. It is the same as connecting your HDD straight to the MB, the back plate just makes connections easier.
