Original Vulcanite care

Folks,

The IIIG I just bought had a sticky vulcanite. Thought mint in condition, the rubberised material has probably deteriorated over the years. When I rubbed my fingers across, I do get this black oily substance.

Anyway, managed to use some mild soap and a wet cloth to clean off the black goo. The vulcanite still feels a bit sticky, so I will probaby need to condition it.

I am trying not to go into getting a case for this as I prefers to shoot without case now. Besides, the IIIG is just so darn sexy with the chrome black combination and the leciavit!!

Googled online and understand that some use Glyercine or lanolin cream to condition. Do you guys know where I can get those?

You should be able to get lanolin from Guardian or Watsons. It is used as a moisturiser. Think you should ask for the pure lanolin; I think they do carry that in Singapore too.

And congrats on your IIIG; it looks really good (both the camera and the pictures of it).

Mendela has a lanolin cream that is quite pure, from the brand you would know what it's use for.:)

Lanolin is used for breastfeeding mom... to prevent chapped nipples.

You took the words right out of my mouth.:):)

Aiyoh... We all adults lah. Anyway, understand baseball players use it to season their gloves too.

When you have a baby girl at home, it's perfectly natural to talk about breastfeeding etc.

Anyway, back to the topic...

Anyone here got other remedy that works? I really hate to change the vulcanite unless no choice.

Haha.. Turned out that I have the nipples cream at home afterall! I've also went to Autobaac to buy a bottle of Mothers Tyre advanced care. It was one of the recommendations.

Will give it a try tonite to see how it goes.

Vulcanite is the rubberised leatherette on the Leica body. Modern Ms uses either leather or vinyl.

Used the tyre care product on the vulcanite sparely. Use a Q-tip to spread the cream on the vulcanite.

Seems ok for now. Good thing about this product is that it will not give a shiny look to the vulcanite. Satin finish and smells slightly better than the vulcanite.

Still a bit oily but waiting for some seasoning, it should be fine.

Can't wait to finish my test roll n DO.

The nipple cream didn't work?

By the way, you should clean out the goop before applying conditioner.

Cheers,
