The next geneation of CMOS is expected to debut late 2014/early 2015

The new sensor will be capable of wider dynanic range, better light gathering from wider angle of incidence and possiblly shorter flange distance (read smaller camera!)
Not to create an Osborne Effect, but this is really close to fruition and might result in a significant improvement in image quality.
