Now to do audio more professionally ?

Hi there,

I am planning to take a video of a reporter talking live. But the "hissing" sound of the background is spoiling everything. I do not have a long boom stick to hang the microphone down from.

I have an audio interface to connect the XLR microphone to the audio interface & my Mac laptop. But I think this is not practical.

I am thinking of getting a video camera with XLR input but then if I do that, the captured video will show the reporter holding the microphone with cables hanging from below the mic.

How do I record and get a clean sound without showing all those cables ? Better still, if the reporter does not have to hold a mic. (But if buying the long stick is the only solution, then I can compromise to let the reporter holding the mic).

Thanks a million.

Cheers

Whether or not there are cables or not, it does not, in any manner, depict your production as professional or amateurish.

Wireless.

Thanks. Can recommend a good one ?
You mean cheap and good, or never-mind-the-price good?

And honestly do you have to buy the mic? You can just rent it you know....Save on costs....

I don't know what budget you have, so I don't know what constraints you're running under....

Ok noted. Can I rephrase my question.

I would like the video to have no cables. In fact, I was hoping to shoot the reporter talking without holding any mic if that is possible.

Wireless.
But that will also require the reporter to hold a mic ? Are you referring to this ?

Anything below say $500

Ok noted but I already owned 2 pairs of xlr mic

Say about $500 but I am hoping that when the video is taken, the reporter is not seen as holding a mic or anything attach to him.

Thanks

Wireless doesn't just refer to a normal condenser wireless mic, it's just refers to anything wireless, and it can also be a wireless lavalier.

You can get the Azden wireless set from sgcamerastore. It's less than $300 but i'm not sure of sound quality. You can choose to substitute the lav with one of your choice.

.....ok.....don't know how that helps the question but yeah, can see that you don't really want to buy another one. Even the wireless lav can be rented from CRC.

If your XLR mics do not need phantom power, you can connect them your camera's input via an XLR to minijack cable or a beachtek or a juicedlink.
If you don't want the mic in shot, boom it over the talent head.
If you don't have a soundman, use a lightstand, a sunbounce sungrip and a ipole mini
If your camera has a flip LCD, you should be able to hold your own boom.
If your camera doesn't have a flip LCD, buy a swivi.
If you have only $30 to spare, rent a Senny G2
If you have $50 to spare, buy a wired lav from Audio Techica
If you have $300 to spare, buy a samson airline micro (UHF) for camera
If you have $750 to spare, buy a Senny G3

ECM-AW3 goes for around $400 but has a half second delay. Lip sync issues and very omni pickup pattern.
What you should never get are VHF lavs like the Azden.

Are they rubbish? Personally I've never tried them.

Extremely prone to interference from any electronic device, including TVs, computers, monitors, cellphones, etc. A walkie-talkie or CB radio in the vicinity will totally knock out the VHF reception.

Thanks Bamboopictures for the various alternatives.

But what you think of this from Azden (I think is a VHF):
