Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all the advice guys and those who pm :) An update: Today I went down to AP to speak to them nicely and one of the senior guy asked me to bring back the flash tomorrow for exchange for a set with warranty. Of coz I muz top up $50 which more or less equals the price other shops quoted me. Guess I will do that in case I got tired of the cam and flash < 1 year.

Will update everyone if the exchange is successful tomorrow. ;)

Believe me, just email Nikon with your flash's serial no plus receipt no. Just complain to them that you got a Nikon Flash from AP, Nikon's authorised reseller but they fail to give you warranty card. Nikon will send you one soon.

A friend of mine just did that.

justarius,

I went to Nikon Last month to have the Focus Screen of my FM10 that my brother bought in the Philippines in '97.They repaired it, no questions ask, even though I didn't have any documentation for it.

The warranty card is something you want when you are claiming warranty during the 1st year manufacturer and parts/services warranty..

After the one year.. doesnt really matter.. also with film bodies.. Nikon is more liberal, but not with digital bodies.. if you notice.. all film bodies come with an International warranty, while most digital bodies come with a local warranty.. (d70, d100)

Nikon Local Warranty

Worldwide Warranty

Notice that the lens & speedlight are international warranty though. But have heard cases it's not honoured? Hmm...

Hi Fellow Club Snappers,

Today, I bought the SB800 from Alan Photo and after I go back surprise it did not have any warranty card. Called up Alan photo and they told me is like that, any problem within a year, bring back to them? Anyone encounter anything like dat before? Is this really true as that guy told me?

I guess I got the export model but it works pretty well with my new D70 (juz collected today) and F65.

I am pretty confused now. Appreciate your kind advice.

Thanks.

did they informed you before purchasing that you're buying a "grey" set?

if not, this is what you can do if you want to have nikon warranty for your flash...
go back to them and insist on the warranty card. else, demand for full refund.
take the refunded money elsewhere and buy a nikon warrantied flash (plus some top up).

For AP, grey sets are normally cheaper than the warrantied sets from CP. However, if you insist on sets with warranty from AP, their prices will get much higher than CP. They're well known to quote you prices without warranties to attract you. They even e-quote me grey set prices!!!

They'll just jack up above normal street prices after finding out you want warranty.

Btw, their during 1 year bring back to them is that they'll send in on behalf of you to Nikon, charges still apply when Nikon makes repairs... these charges will go to you.

AP quoted price much higher than CP??? Not that I know of! I have never had problem with them. The sales person I always go for will only give me warranty stuff. If he didn't have the stock, he will tell me only gray set is available. Quote this example, I once asked the price of MB-D100 from them and he quoted 360 (which I find reasonable) but was then island wide unavailable. Then I wen to CP, the fat retarded (sorry, I hate to curse but I really don't have good experience at CP, not even ONCE!) sales person after lookin' at me with my bermudas on, relunctanlty check the price from a file and quoted me the Nikon's website's retail price. Best of all, no stock too!!!

However, I managed to get one at TCW later at the price of 380SGD. They somehow had 5 of them in stock and stored it at some tall shelve (bad person :) ).

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the ideas and an update. :) Went back to AP and the person as promised, exchange the set for me to a warranty set. Pay $50 for the extra peace of mind. Anyway, an experience for me. Emailed Nikon SG but no response, maybe they are using snail mail or bochap mail protocol. :dunno:

Anyway, extra $50 buy me a peace of mind for 1st year. :D

Lesson Learnt : 1) Make sure got warranty (unless u don't mind grey)
2) Make sure serial number match
3) Make sure they stamp on the warranty
4) Make sure u have a receipt

Hope this helps.

ummm..what I mean is sending in after the 1 year (warranty over). I hope the flash don't fail me for 1st year. Wondering after that, is Nikon SG willing to service the gray set, of coz with charges? :dunno:

Considering the fact I still ask the person in AP if got problem within a year, can I send the set to Nikon SG for service and he nod his head!!!

Now I know why Sim Lim shops have such bad reputation. I learnt my lesson, no more AP in the future!!! I check out prices in Cathay and TK photo. All prices sama sama +- a bit. But most importantly, the sales pple care to explain things to u!!!

Lesson Learnt : Ask for WARRANTY and match the serial when you buy your camera products!!!

thanks for this posting. i just went down to AP this afternoon to enquire the prices for D70 and SB800. the salesman quoted me $670 which is roughly the same as CP, but higher than TCW's quote of $620. i then chatted with the salesguy for a while and he told me that they supply to TCW as well. i guess it all makes sense now ... btw, how's your sb800? heard it's a better model than sb600 (which nikon will only launch in may this year). anyway, can't wait so long, so may grab it together with my d70.

Hi,

Don't own a SB600, so no idea how it perform. According to the D70 (page 187), SB600 will be missing the following compare to SB800:
- Auto Aperture mode
- Non-TTL Auto
- Range priority manual
- Repeating flash

Compared to my metz, I think the SB800 has so far been very good for me  Light can be thrown quite far, even at 300mm, my pics turn out well exposed and sharp, esp with those slower 300mm lens. This is further enhanced by custom tone curves which I adapt for the cam.

Comes with small built in little bounce card to reduce red eye, don't really find them useful tho but I kinda like the soft diffuser box. Only thing missing for me now is to make a big bounce card when I have the time.

Hope this info is useful for you. :)

Thanks and warmest regards.

haha, let's not confuse the kindness of the people at nikon for "*tupidity"
they were just being generous and honouring the repairs for good customer service.

let's face it, if it were a genuine case where someone had just bought something legit and did not have the warranty documents, they would have been screaming blue murder at forums if the guys at nikon had been firm and stuck to their rules.

so let's give nikon credit for a job well done. :)
