Let me start a new compliment thread which I find it rare in Singapore. We tends to complain more than praise.

Recently, I was going for a holiday trip (of course one of main aim is to take photo). The flight is departing in the afternoon. I noticed some dusts on my sensor and decided to blow them off so that my photo will be perfect.

After many blows, the dust still show. Then I move one more step. I use a cotton bud to light brush off the dust using my macro lens to view the sensor. Innovative right? Initially it seems to help but I wanted it to be better. Then I brush more.... Alas, I notice a scratch! I quickly stop and ponder should I using some liquid to clean or what.

I decided not to do anything but to bring it to NSC upon my return from my trip. With no mood, I just brought my cam and a single lens for the trip. Not even my bag.

On my return, I quickly went to NSC. The nice lady at the reception attended to me almost immediately. After listening to my problem, she assure me that the technician will take approx 10-15 to check and advice. Meanwhile, the showroom guy (a spectacle guy with a smiling face) ask me what happen and chit chat with me. He even show their products and offer help.

Within 15 mins, the lady reverted. She told me there is. I scratches and they have removed the residue probably due to my cleaning. I ask how about those dust. She told me it would be $27 if I wish to clean and it will take 1 hr. Oh yes, I wanted it clean.

Within an hour, I paid $27 and have a clean sensor. You know what? They even update the software for me!

It was an efficient and pleasant experience for me. Of course the main thing is, I don't have to buy a new camera. Do you guys have similar experiences to share?

thank you for sharing your experience with Nikon Service Centre. Good to know they help you with your problem.

since this is related to consumer matter, it will posted in consumers corner. thread moved.

btw, I would like to share something with you too.

sensor cleaning is very easy and can do it yourself with the right tools, unless you are those "bold hand bold leg" person than better just leave it to service center to do the cleaning for you.

recently edutilos- recommended Copperhill Sensor Cleaning Kit to me..

Uncle catchlights,

Can buy Copperhill Kit... I find it easier to use than the sensor swab and it's wayyyy cheaper also. Think one kit can clean way more than 30 times. I use for 1 year already still haven't even touched 10% of the packet.

Copper Hill Images - D-SLR CCD/CMOS Cleaning Supplies & Camera Accessories

I bought the kit and very please with the results.

hope this help.

er...... nope,
buy online, don't even need to leave my house, deliver to my door step....
and I can do sensor cleaning while surfing ClubSNAP... kekeke.

Ok will consider. So far I did 2 cleaning in 2 years. But always good to be able to do it yourself. Never know when you need this service.

for the service fee you paid, the cost of your two trips, can let you do DIY cleaning every two weeks for the next two years. :)

oh, btw, I do entitle free sensor cleaning at the service center, but my time is not free, making a trip there is not free, so DIY is still a good deal for me. ;)

I just ordered from Copperhill..make sure select the "international" type. If not , the shipping cannot be processed.

Service is generally good at nikon service center, but when it comes to turnaround time ror repair, I would say they need to improve on it.

I always got good service in NSC actually. There is actually one time when my battery door broke. I waited for 5 mins and it was replaced for me on the spot. Was pleasantly surprised!

Sounds like really efficient service.

Any idea if they charge fees for general inspection of camera?

Bringing up an old thread here because I found dust again. I am going for a trip this weekend and hope to bring a clean sensor for the trip. I missed the mass order for the CopperHill sensor. I come across 'VisibleDust EZ Sensor Cleaning Kit'. The video seems to function the same but the swap looks kind of custom made.
Anyone use this or any other locally available product you guys want to recommend?

Actually many shops now sell sensor cleaning kits and swabs. Visible dust cleans using static brush IIRC. If the dust is stuck to the sensor, the brush will not remove it also. Another option is to use sensor cleaning gel cube stick.

Thanks for the heads up. Read the gel cube stick. I was thinking, if you are already into the sensor, a wet swab would be a better option. Seen the copperhill video and it look simple enough. However, locally this product is not available. Any similar types you guys know?

You can start your own Members Non Profit Mass Order for the Copperhill cleaning kit, you can save on the shipping if you find three or more people co-sharing the shipping cost.

it is much economy than other cleaning methods I know of, just at the cost of 2.5 time sensor cleaning at Nikon Service Center, you can clean your own sensor every weeks for close to two years.

Fyi, Leica uses the gel stick to clean their sensors in their assembly facility in Germany.

Yesterday I went over to Peninsula Plaza and Funan to check out. There are a few but none similar to the Copperhill. The disposal swabs of 4 cost $20 in one of the shops and they are the most reasonable. I checked online they cost $5-6!

I guess I have to leave with it temporarily till I am back from my holiday in end March before I order online. Not going to try anything funny like what I did the last time hours before I fly off.

Thank you guys.
