actually it is 1/80s. Yup, I have to agree that that's the ONLY WEAKNESS of Nikon F3hp. Still...I would like to get one myself and use it as a manual camera.

Koh King is right about the F3 flash-sync being at 1/80th only.
Even then, it is more than sufficient for most flash situation. This is still my default camera when I go out for leisure shoots - there's just something about it that just feels right in the plams of your hands! Besides, how can you not fall in love with such a thing of beauty! :D

Any current AF Nikon body will allow you to manually control the shutter speed (shutter-priority mode), aperture (aperture-priority mode) or both at the same time (manual mode) but still give you auto-focus functions. If you want to go full manual, then its the case of swtiching the AF off and manually focusing with the lens as well.

No manual camera ("mechanical" by your terminology) will give you auto-focusing capabilities, with the exception of the F3AF but that requires specific F3AF lenses. The manual bodies requires you to go back to basics and with something like the F3, they provide some "automation" in the form of a Aperture-Priority mode where the shutter speed is selected automatically for you based on your aperture selection.

I had the pleasure of owning a string of Nikons in the past i.e. FG, FM2, F3HP, FA and now F501, F80, F90, S1, S2, 880. Made the switch as age caught up and not because of technology.

If not for my eyesight, I would have continued with my F3HP.
Hook it up with the MD4 and a 50mm 1.4 and you will be in your own world! Go for it as it the best you can get.

It never cease to get my attention each time I see one in the showcase! ;p

Hi Jay,

any reviews about Nikon FA? thanks!

Hi Swimcraze,

The first range of cameras is no longer with me but only the F3HP left me an everlasting impression. However I do recall that the FA with the MD also had a good feel. Pictures taken were relatively good also (it also depends on the lens used). Overall its also a very good camera but being "semi-automatic" (early state of technology), it may develop unforeseen problem.

Jay,

What is the 'unforseen' problem? I have had the FA for almost 11 years now. No problem so far. Please enlighten.

I do recall that I had a problem with its electronics and something to do with the metering ... probably got a bad apple from the whole barrel.

This is the only incident I had with a Nikon. Never had problem with the rest.
