thanks for sharing. whats the codec f& resolution or this recording.
i think the camera work was quite good as well.

well considering the price of the d90 i think not bad already. the 5dmk2 just set the standard to beat. lets wait and see what nikon has in the pipeline.

Apart from the jerking, which may be from my system, the video rawks:thumbsup:

thanks for sharing... D90 seems need more fps but video quality is fine for me for none moving subjects.

The codec is MJPEG (Motion JPEG, not MPEG) at 1280x720 resolution and 24P, but it looks like the bitrate is too low to handle fine details like the water ripples on the river.

Some info regarding video shooting with the D90:

You need to use Live Mode for video, with no autofocus. This has 2 disadvantages, firstly it is tough to focus with the LCD panel (my eventual workaround was to pre-focus using the viewfinder before switching to LV) and secondly you can only remain in LV for a limited time before it shuts off. this is due to the camera overheating protection so you could end up in a situation where you cannot even shoot at all until it cools down. Arrrrgh!

The exposure is not easy to control. The shutter is fixed at 1/50s which is fine for video, but adjusting the aperture doesn't seem to do anything. By default, the exposure flickers around all the time as objects move in the scene, or if the camera moves. Howver there is a way to lock the exposure, so at least you can stop the constant auto-exposure adjustments that you see on some D90 video samples. What's not so nice is that you can't easily set wide open aperture to get DOF control.

The fixed 24P causes problems with fluorescent lighting due to the supply frequency being different from the camera frame rate. The flickering effect is not so good.

Overall, it was the codec artifacts on fine details that was a show-stopper for me. The other problems I could easily have lived with to get the large image sensor in a video camera, but I wanted footage that I could use alongside my XH-A1 footage and there is no way the D90 output would hold up. Anyway I have sold off my D90 already. I consider it an expensive training exercise.

BTW, as a still camera, the D90 seems really really nice. :)

i think all eye will be on the 5D mark 2 ...since the second dslr to offer video mode.
just wondering if any canon dslr offer video mode beside it.

Yes the new 5D looks much better for video than the D90. It's still fixed frame rate though (30P), so I foresee some flickering problems using it indoors in a PAL country.

But the idea of large sensors for video is very exciting, it can only lead to better video cams for us in the future. Now if only they can make a good video lens with motorised zoom for this format at an affordable price it will be fantastic! :D

believe that local dealer will bring in pal format 5D mark 2. hopefully we can get a hold of it to try it in out in with different hd format .
understand from some the forum that it might heat up the lcd as its not meant for long duration of filming in video mode. Convertion is not issue, as there are a few plug in that you can try to convert the format of video.

Thanks for sharing your footage. its awesome.

Hi samvision. Thanks for the kind words. I loved the colours from the D90 but there are too many compromises at the moment to make it a viable video cam (for me anyway).

If the 5D Mk2 has PAL frame rates it'll be great for us in Singapore. I heard there's a 12 minute limit on shooting duration, but don't know if it's due to file size or temperature issues. In Singapore conditions, the D90 cuts out due to overtemperature after a few minutes in LiveView (even if you're not actually shooting). And you just have to wait for it to cool down before you can take another shot. Hopefully these problems will be history with the next round of cameras that comes along after the D90 and 5D Mk2.
