Nikon D80 or upgrade

If that case, go for good len. 24-70mm F/2.8G with your D80.... and wait for next year D800... if you want to move to FX

Hmm .. that sounds interesting. D800 seems a heavy weight with features. You put me in another circle of thinking ;). Thanks

Hi

I am also a user of Nikon D80 for almost the same period. Also thinking of upgrading my gear to either D7000 or D300s. D700 is a good to have but way above my budget.

Well for me, i am thinking of keeping the D80 and get another camera body so that I could have one camera with the wide angle while the other with zoom lens. In this way, it saves the trouble of changing lens and missed the important moment.

Just my 2 cents! ;)

D80 was my first DSLR, and it was an amazing learning journey. Anyhow the biggest discernible changes would probably be the better ISO control for current machines.

Otherwise you can still do what you are doing best, and even better with the existing D80

d80 is my first dslr i have change to d300s but i still keep my d80 n sometime use it :)

Hi Nikonians,
I own a Nikon D80 for over 3 years and quite love it. Though the camers is in pretty good condition.

A thought came to my mind as if ... I should upgrate it to something better like D7000 or I should keep myself happy with D80?

Comments please!!!

if you have the budget, just upgrade loh.
Good for the economy. Make our BnS more vibrant as well. ;)

anyway, giantcanopy mentioned this. Biggest benefit will be the large iso numbers you can go with minimum noise.

Bro, if $ permits, suggest you upgrade. Lol...

I was in same situation as you. Owned a relatively unused D80 but just bought a D300s recently. I'm an amateur and take pics of my kids but I just love the way D300s handles, esp under high ISOs and low light conditions (I'm using my old 18-200mm lens btw). Loves the solidness of the D300s and how the shutter sound (lol). Go for it...but note that D400 is on it way to market soon and expect D300s price to soften thereafer (learnt abou it after I bought my camera!!). Good luck hunting...

question is, do you really need to upgrade? the proper upgrade path should be Photographer(your own skills) -> Lens -> Body

As in, upgrade yourself as a photographer and skills, and when you've reached a cap, go for the lens. Once you've mastered those, upgrade your camera body.

edit: thom hogan's post on upgrading http://www.bythom.com/blame.htm

everyone should read thom hogan!

i'm a strong advocate :)

the point being that pros throughout the ages have shot beautiful pictures on the cameras of their time. so, if u got the $, the desire, and u know what is limiting your photography.. then ;)

just do it if u need to

Thanks everyone .. its been long since the thread was started and I had more or less forgotten that it existed. Over the years I was contended .. with D80 .. but now I chose to upgrade ... for a fresh start

So you havn't got a new cam? There are lots of new cams annoucements recently, you have plenty to choose :)

I upgraded from D5k to D7k last year and I wouldn't say it made me a better in terms of skills but the short cut buttons and an extra dial really helps alot!!

My hands are itchy now. Haha. The lack of BIM on my d5k and usO performance at 1600 and above compells me to upgrade

BIM is not as important any more, as Nikon has very good consumer grade prime lenses like the AFS 35, 50 and 85mm f1.8 lenses and zoom lens like 70-300mm VR.
