I just realized that if you do not put in the battery into a Nikon DSLR, the viewfinder darkens and you cannot manual focus a lens. But once the battery is inserted, but the camera still in 'off' position, the viewfinder brightens and you can manually focus a lens, does it mean that power is being consumed even if your camera's not switched 'ON'?

Older SLR and Canon DSLR don't require a battery to brighten the viewfinder and focus the lens manually. What's the rational behind this? Can anyone enlighten me?

if my memory serve me correctly, older SLR have a window behind the viewfinder to allow in a little light to backlight the viewfinder

IMO, we dont need to waste time and effort worrying about this.
Cause.....ultimately......

Even if you could manually focus without the battery............
you cant even take a shot right? ;p;p;p

yeah, the camera body's color is generally black or silver. Yet to see a green one. ;p;p

But seriously, what I've heard (not sure if its true), is that the focus screen needs power to "clear up" as there are some circuits on it for the focus points etc.

In any case, it should not matter. If my camera is not in use for a long time, i would take the battery out. Its never a good practice to leave batteries inside the electronic item if its not being used for an extended period of time.

I think it's to remind you that there's no power. If I'm not wrong, the darkening is acheved with a LCD shutter which consumes negligible electricity.

The top LCD also shows the remaining shots and draw some power as well. But the total power drawn by the camera is so so small that it is about the same as your clock at home. It is significantly less than the standby power of any other electronic equipment you have at home (e.g. TV, DVD player). Don't worry and be happy.

this is a feature to prevent you from taking shots when there is no battery

thus avoid wasting energy, since there will be no result

Perhaps TS was trying to use a Nikon camera with long lens as a spotting scope, not to take pictures at that time. If that is the case, then the ability to manually focus the lens through the camera viewfinder without batteries would be useful.

On the other hand, if a long Nikkor lens were to be used as a spotting scope, then a Lens Scope Converter should be used instead of a camera.

u wan green? y nt get a full manual mechanical camera that doesn't even require batt? :sweatsm:

Green = Environmental friendly, energy saving, for those who thinks it's the color of the camera :bsmilie:

Of cos everyone knows you need power to take a shot for DSLR , I am not talking about Nikon F2, FM2 or Canon F-1 here, but at least I feel it would be nice if you can actually view thru a camera in its full glory to check a camera or a lens, or view your composition without needing power to light up the viewfinder, canon can do it, why can't nikon? I just wanted to know the rational behind, power might be minimal, but it's still power, and without these mininal power, how are you going to check out the latest D700 viewfinder if the salesman refuse to slot in a battery cos it's brand new.

If the salesman lanlan refuse to slot in the batt, i don see how he will let you mount ur own lens or the kit lens, and in that case, i don see the point of even letting him getting this business. Its seriously not a thing to even fuss about... its be there so many years and i don see anyone complaining.

Not fussing, just wondering in these days where every company are looking for ways to reduce or save energy, don't you want to put in your little bit of effort to support that? if everyone held the mentality of 'its be there so many years and i don see anyone complaining', then things will not move or improve.

This "green" movement is good.

However, why don't we put aside this thing, and start taking some pictures. I don't see any urgency to make it "green", coz my decision to buy camera will not be based whether it's "green" or not.

Honestly, how many times are you going to look on viewfinder without battery in camera in the entire lifetime of the camera ? For what purpose ?

seriously u are just fussing the smallest thing, but clicking the "create new thread" button, you are already spending more juice than what a camera that has got its viewfinder "lit up" for a good 24hr

Ahh...this thread tickles my funny bone...;)
The line highlighted in bold must be in return of my initial post in #2 lah...:D
Well, maybe not every know leh...coz you were the FIRST to find out that
you cant manually focus a lens and that the 'viewfinder' cant light up leh.
Or is it because you tried to fire a shot then the Salesman say 'Mr, no battery how to
release the shutter?'

Then ah, (I dont mean to be rude here), but if you really are into the 'Green' movement,
why not write (I mean really write a letter;)) to Straits Times or some other Daily, and
ask that they ask why there are countless buildings and billboards that are lit up after 10pm. CBD, shopping malls, etc, do they really need to be lit up?

Or...or....could the L-ion battery of the D700 actually power the DBS or HSBC building in Shenton Way so much so that you are so rattled?

Or...or...the real reason why you are so peeved..........

is that you were unable to 'test' the D700 through a salesman? :bsmilie:

CHILL LAH BRO, C H I L L. (oh, this takes electricity too!!)
