Nikon 5700

Hi,

Can someone help to explain to me as I am confused ?
I am using a Nikon 5700, the effective focal length 35~280mm. I have some photo where the full EXIF info shows focal length like 8.9mm. I thought the focal length should be between 35~280mm ?

35-280mm is actually the 35mm equivalent focal length.
