Nigerian Scams

Hi!

Well I almost got scammed... and here's how.

I recently posted a WTSell thread on my Canon rangefinder and to my excitement, someone opted to buy it with contact through e-mail. So we discussed.. yada yada yada.. landing to a point where he asked me to ship it to Nigeria for his wife, due to him not having the time himself to give it to her (specifically through DHL, TNT or UPS, which I found a little suspicious). So yeah, I thought "no time to meet 1-to-1, so okay, no problem I'll ship for him", with extra cost of course.

So here's the address he gave:

Address: 11 Odunsi street Lawanson
city: Surulere/Lagos
Country: Nigeria
zip code: 23401

Thank god for my zero knowledge I have about international shipping, leading me to google each shipping courier with hopes I get a quote of price for shipping. Every quote rejected me of the address being invalid. So I googled the postal code and address, and TADAHH, loads of articles/user forums mentioning about the almost similar address stating that they're scams. You can try to google the mentioned address and see for yourself.

So please be careful.
Google is your best friend.
Peace!

ask a noob qn. how does this scam works? he send u the $ then u ship to an invalid address, which will be detected at the courier's end. so no shipping is done.

how does the scammer make the profit?

simple,
a few ways;
method 1, they say they will send you money first, and than they claim OVERPAID you by mistake, show you the fake bank documents. so ask you to RETURN the excess money.
and you once TT them the excess money, you than notice there ain't any money sent to you in the first place, and that is the last time you hear from these scammers.

FYI, another member encounter the same kind of scammers.

[h=3]online transaction.. advise needed.. thanks!![/h]

btw, strongly advise members not to list your email contact in personal classified section, there is no way we can stop these scammers reading personal classified section.

and also, this has noting to do with photography technique discussion, thread moved.

Unless you know the person directly, personally and have valid reason to trust - you can safely delete everything (email, fax, messages) that mentions money and Nigeria together in the same sentence.
