Hi,
i'm a newbie to video as i'm entirely engrossed with photography for most part of my life when it comes to capturing moments of time.
i tried digging up lots of web info on the difference in video formats, particularly those that could be had on DSLR (including mirrorless, SLT and all sorts of interchangeable-lens cameras), but i'm only confused further and further because of other information that came along the way.
i'm using an early 2011 OSX laptop w/Intel HD graphics 3000 (384MB). i intend to up the RAM to 8GB if it helps to make up for the lack of video processing power. It is highly unlikely for me to switch out of OSX after 8 years of pleasant experience, so i'll be using just iMovie to do the basics. If my current hardware is to retire, it will most likely be another OSX device.
i don't foresee doing much editing (or adding effects more than fading in/out) but to have a music sound track backing the video which will mostly be silent. The only "effect" i would certainly do is to slow a clip down to give a relaxed pace/feel to it. i don't know how to describe it because it's not really slow-motion but just a tad slower. i find it... romantic.
( i also read on stabilization to help create this "flying" or "floating" effect  )
For such amateur use, i look forward to your advice on the easiest format for me and my hardware to handle. Please bear with my lack of proper terminology and correct me if necessary. i'm looking at 1920x1080, and i'm saving clips up on DVD as gifts to families, because that's how my work would be viewed or played back (on TV or computer).
Thank you.
