Hi fellow forum friends.
I've been interested in IR for a while and have been invstigating antique documents and

manuscripts - trying to mimic forensic spectography on the cheap.

After reading your great posts and picking up a few tips I thought I would have a go at

using my trusty Fuji 602 out in the field
I have been using an InfraRed acetate sheet in my research (£4GBP from ebay) and cut

out a suitable sized disc and taped it to the front of the lens - nice neat and portable. The

results were OK but exposure times were running into the seconds.

Then fortune smiled.
My wife bought me an Olympus E500 lit for christmas.

I decided to risk turning my 602 into a brick by stripping it down and removing the IR/UV

filter from the ccd now I didn't need it for regular photography - nerve racking
Fortune smiled again!
Not a brick - but an IR camera that gives respectable handheld speeds and even with the

filter attached displays a bright, clear - if tinted image.

Anyway - here are a couple of my first pics - all had a simple Photoshop postprocessing - a

quick tweak on the curves and a greyscale conversion. The samples are reasonably low res

but hopefully give a good idea of where I am going. I would appreciate any feedback,

comments or advice that anyone would like to offer.

Phew - first post over

Cheers

Mike

Hi Mike,

good pictures.

Incidentally, was taking out the IR filter from your camera a major operation?

Hi Mike.

A very warm welcome to this IR Community. Feel free to discuss anything IR, lots of friendly people here.

BTW - can't see your pic

Hi BErnard, thanks for the comment.
Taking the IR filter out meant completely stripping the camera down and was a bit nerve wracking at first. Fortunately there is an excellent guide on the web which gives step by step instructions, I will dig the link out if anyone wants it.
It took me a couple of hours to complete but I was taking my time and being very careful - it may have been my 'old' camera but I still didn't want to ruin it. For anyone competent with a screwdriver and who has a spare 602 I would highly recommend it. Overall an easy modification. Changing the camera back to normal should be just as easy.

cheers
Mike

Hi Mike,
I'd modded my S602Z quite sometime ago too ;)
Pity that the camera's res is only abt 3mp. But could still get good results.
Nice pics :)

thanks for the positive comments everyone - it's nice to know I'm going in the right direction. I'm hoping to experiment more as soon as I can get some time - and a bit of sun ! !

Hi Ark
nice to know that I am in good company modding the 602. As you said the 3mp is a bit of an issue but the mod is so easy and the results are prety decent for a PS camera and so far I am happy with the prints at A4. Have you any images shot on your camera - it would be nice to see more pics - have you upgraded to a higher mp.
Regards

Hi Mike, sorry for the late reply, bz with work....
I didn't group the photos according to camera type, but the most recent is this:
http://ark19.multiply.com/photos/album/34
Can also view them from http://ark19.clubsnap.org/gallery/Infrared?page=1 (but this will be closed soon as I dun intend to continue CS gallery subscription....)

Currently my main IR camera is D70i
It's great to have a modded cam as the shutter speed is much faster.
However, my fav filter is Tiffen #87. Although it's b/w, the IR effect is much pure
Cheers!

Fantastic images and great composition. You certainly have got a 'creative eye' - Looks like I have still got a lot to learn - most especially about filter types. I am experimenting with a sheet of infrared cut filter acetate at the moment but am looking to try a few more optical filters including the hoya r72, which seems popular and the Tiffen 87 that you prefer.
I'm looking for a cheap Oly to mod so that I can get the pixel count up and the noise down

I've added a few new images to my site www.mikespix.co.uk - don't laugh if you look - I'm a complete newbie to web site creation as well as IR

Again - thanks for the coments & feedback

Hi Mike, we are all learning here ;)
The infrared cut filter acetate might be letting more visible light thru.
U should try a R72, it works very well with S602Zi.
Keep shooting and enjoy :D
