Hi everybody,
Sorry in advance for this being so long!
I hoping any owners of the Minolta AF 28 -70 f2.8 G can help me, me query is in connection with the AF speed (or lack of it!!!). I bought one new and it arrived yesterday.
When I took it out of the box and tried it on my Dynax 7 and Dynax 9, I couldn't believe how slow it focused on both cameras. Now I mean really slow. It was like using the Minolta 7000 all over again!! When I use it on the D9 it will focus real slow but when the camera indicates it is focused, you can see it is in sharpe focus.
On the D7 it still focuses really slow but on this time when the camera indicates it has prefect focus lock on the focus indicated, you can see that it has not achieved prefect focus. The image is clearly out of focus!! If I switch to manual focus and adjust focus I can see the image sharpen up!
I had read lots of reviews on the lens before I decided to buy it, some said it focused slow, others said it focused fast on the D7 & D9. So i thought it would be OK.
Man am I bummed out with the performance of it. I didn't even run a film through the camera with the lens, its so slow its nearly unusable!
I have never had a lens that focused so slow. The lenses I have at the moment are
Vivitar 19-35
Minolta 24-50
Minolta 24-105
Sigma 24-70 f2.8
Minolta 50 f1.7
Minolta 85 f1.4 (Non G)
Minolta 70-210 f4
Sigma 70-210 f2.8

ALL of these focus faster on all my cameras : 7000, 800si, D7 & D9.

I'm hoping somebody out there can tell me how their lens focuses compared to other lenses they own. Maybe I just got a Boogy one especially with it not focusing properly on my D7 camera.
I am going to send it back to the shop if this is how all the 28-70 lenses are and maybe buy the Minolta Dimage 7Hi digital camera.
Any help in this matter would be gladly accepted.
Thanks in advance,

It was a known issue that 28-70 G lens focusing is very slow. It is not your lens problem, it is not your camera problem. it is suppose to be like that.

If forcusing speed is very important to you(rather than quality), by all means change to a faster one. You can also bring it to the shop and demand changing a new one.

Good luck.

28-70/f2.8 G IS a slow focusing lens. In comparison, the D9 body focuses faster than say a 700si with the same lens but still slower than using 70-210/f4.

It's unusual that it does not lock focus properly with your D7, so best to check it out. Perhaps it has locked focus on a defined focus point.
