Since a typhoon has ruined any chance of me enjoying this weekend I've put aside some time to write another review, this time of the CV 35/1.7 Ultron. You can find it here:

http://www.cosina-voigtlander.com/content/view/60/28/

Also, I've added seperate categories in the gallery for lens samples so if anyone is using CV lenses I would appreciate it if you could upload a couple shots. This will allow people interested in the lenses to better compare how they render photos (i.e. bokeh. contrast, tonality). Under the User Menu click on Your Photos, then select Lens Samples->[Your Lens].

Thanks!

Thanks to those who have contributed photo samples so far :)

Thanks for the review. Can't wait for a review of 35mm f1.2 ...

I can't wait for someone to treat me to a 35/1.2 so that I can review it :D

Someone did upload a few images shot with the 35 Nokton into the lens samples gallery, though. It's enough to increase my lust factor by 10 :p

The 35mm f/1.2 is a damn good performer. The size puts me off though.. It's huge for a RF lens!

I have a 25mm and 35mm color-skopar but is deciding between either the ultron 35mm or nokton 35mm. The latter cost twice the amount but with 1 stop different.

Any opinion on the ultron 35mm f1.7 and the 28 mm f1.9? Or should I get a 28mm f1.9 instead?

Brian has a reviewed on 28/1.9 here ---> http://www.cosina-voigtlander.com/content/view/33/28/

The 28/1.9 Ultron replaced the 35/1.7 Ultron as my standard street photography lens. They are both sharp and fast, though...I just like the wider AOV the 28 has. It more suits my style of close & wide. Plus I think the 28 renders better b&w (within my exposure & processing standard).

In terms of "expert" opinion, Putts (who never actually takes photos) stated that the 28 Ultron is Leica-like and the Luminous Landscape (by Sean Reid) RD-1 lens tests has the 28 Ultron holding better highlight and shadow detail overall then the Voigt 28/3.5 and Leica 28/2 (the 'cron held the best shadow detail and the worst highlight detail, the Skopar held the worst shadow detail and the best highlight detail, and the ultron was good in both). In fact, he kept the 28 ultron and returned the others. :)

It doesn't matter which one you buy now, they're both excellent lenses. You'll probably catch lens lust disease and want the other one soon after. I did.
Since they're both discontinued, get them before the price goes bananas because of 'rarity'. if you're a gambling person, wait and see if CV re-releases them in M mount version next year (although I wouldn't hold my breath).

I just bought the 35/1.7. After shooting a roll, I noticed that when wide open there is vignetting which is quite noticeable is all my pics. Below are some example although I sort of like this unexpected effect.

Any advice? Is it the characteristic of the lens? Perhaps it is the lens hood?

I would suspect it's the lens hood. Try without and see whether the effect is better.

Such lovely kids... what are they looking at on their right? :)

My guess is that it's a combination of the lens hood and lighting. No need for a lens hood indoors, anyway. What's weird is I've only had vignetting once with this lens and I was never able to repeat the circumstances. I've also received similar reports from other users...they saw vignetting once but don't remember the circumstances and were never able to repeat it.

Just run another two rolls without the hood at low lighting situation. The vignetting is gone mostly.

still odd...I have the hood on 24/7 and have only had vigenetting once.

Maybe it is also due to the lighting condition. Then again I would say the vignetting produced some interesting results ;p
