had the 17-55 & 16-85 vr think both equally good in day time use, if limited in budget get 2nd hand 16-85 has wider range and see some selling for $150-$180 really a good buy at this price vs $1500-$2000+ for new 17-55mm

i have D300 and 17-55 f2.8 too and they are all that i have now. thou kinda heavy but i think they are worth the weight compared to IQ. lol i just sold the rest of my lenses and camera body away. saving the money for FF lens. planning to get 70-200 f2.8 soon.
another way i would like to recommend is getting AF-S 12-24 f4 (DX), 24-70 f2.8 (FX) and 70-200 (FX) as these will last you a long time even if you are gonna change over to FX format next time. this will probably what i will be aimming for in the coming years. My 17-55 f2.8 basically replaced the 12-24 and 24-70. thou missing the range 12-16 and 56-69 but i think i can forgo those gap for the time being.
If you are asking why i didnt go for 14-24 f2.8 ... reason is that its front element is really big and i cant put a protective filter in front. i just feel kinda insecure using it and in case i accidentially had finger print on it .. gonna be troublesome cleaning. i hope to keep my lens filter at 77mm too.
