Hi Csers,

I need your advise and help. I'm still a newbie in video stuff. though i have the gear (DSLR 5D, go pro and other video cam). I was planning to shoot a person riding a mountain bike. I just need to know what sort of basic tips you can give to me (fps setting and aperture). i want some shots to be in slow motion during editing.. i'm not so sure how.. hope you can give me some advise...

If u are ok with 720p. You can use 60fps on dslr.

Will give you double the amount of frames for slow mo.

For gopro slow-mo, must use twixtor in post to get a good motion.

If you want to use Twixtor in post, the ideal shot will be when the bicycle is going up, with a clean background. Otherwise the slow-mo will look awful with a crowded background.

Several types of cameras were used:
1.sports cam /go-pro for the on-board and Point-Of-View shots
2. DSLR with wide-angle lens for the tripod shots

You can also use a regular HD-enabled Point-and-shoot with a wide angle attachment and a handlebar camera mount from SGcamerastore. They also stock clamp and swivel arm with 1/4" bolt suitable for small cameras.

The colors will be hard to achieve without color grading. You can use Looks for easy presets. If it is a commercial shoot, consider renting the FS700 for your slow-mo sequence. It does a whopping 250fps!

Shoot at 60p. So that you have more frames to slow-mo in post. If you have twixtor, that will be great. If you dun, my best bet is dun slow-mo in post more that 40% because you will be facing the jerking effect.

For your aperture settings, my opinion will be just don't clip your highlights.

Get some close up shots that people dun get see when they see moutain bikers riding around. You know like sand flying around, bunny hop over a stone or pot-hole, chain moving, etc.

With regards to your inspired film, all you need to do is plan your story.
- Before you go out there and shoot, pen down all your ideas, shots and how you want to tell your story. By doing so, you will save a lot of time because you already have in mind what shots that you want to take. And you have more time to shoot "cut-aways" or "fillers" shots.
- At the same time, you know what equipment to bring along.
- I am still figuring whether at 01:04, did the videoshooter is using mini-jib or stabilizer.

Thought of sharing my all time favourite MTB video. Hopefully, you will get inspired.

You mean 00:54? My guess is either a helicopter mount camera or just a simple camera mount on a tight cable tied to 2 trees.

No. I was referring to you link.

MTB freeride - Confirm plus chop, they used helicam.

Just shoot at a higher frame rate or higher shutter speed to get enough frames for slo-mo in post.

5% slow mo w/o twixtor is possible.

Mattrunks has this tutorial:
Create extreme slow motion video without plugins | Tutorial After Effects on Mattrunks
As with everyone above, watch ur bg n framerate.

But seriously... sports video = spamming slo-mo twixtor shots? Can't think of anything else...?
But if you'd really like to contribute to the tons of aimless slo-mo vids on vimeo or youtube, knock yourself out.
+ enjoy hor.

Yeah too many people are doing slow motion shots. It becomes mainstream and doesn't have the uniqueness anymore. They always think "Oh i can just use Twixtor to slow down my videos at post", it is actually the wrong way to make slow motion film.

There's no slowmo in this video. Just shoot at 25fps, 1/50 shutter speed. Just be a little different from the rest and create a unique video that represents yourself.

.

It's still not very common other than the fact that people think it's cool to just have a slow-motion video.

The fact is to know how to use the slow-motion to enhance the video, and not the use-twixtor-to-slow-down-to-1000fps-until-like-nothing-is-moving-but-it-looks-cool kind of slow.
