TOKYO (AP) — Two more movie theaters in Japan have canceled screenings of The Cove, an Oscar-winning documentary that shows footage of a dolphin hunt in a Japanese village.

In recent months, protesters with loudspeakers have been shouting slogans at the Tokyo office of Unplugged, the distributor of The Cove, criticizing the film as a betrayal of Japanese pride.

Unplugged said Friday the cancellations at Cinemart theaters in Tokyo and Osaka were triggered by worries about safety of moviegoers and businesses nearby. The Tokyo cinema where the movie was to open changed its mind Thursday after getting angry phone calls and warnings of protests.

i've seen it
Still have it in my com
really heart wrenching to see how they kill the dolphins

not sure why, but is this any reason to drag out news that's like... almost a year old? what is your point exactly?

because most certainly the weird ways of the Japanese are well-known.

from what i feel, you're focused not on the movie but on how terrible the Japanese people are. maybe you'd like to point out, that most Japanese don't know about this going on as well? rather than misdirect everyone into thinking that the Japanese as a nation condone this?

A must see documentary, very heart aching:cry: salute to the ones who went all the way to film it.

It happens everywhere. If not dolphins, it will be Cancerous chemicals in the water, etc etc etc.

Blame it on big business and political lobbying. But it happens all over the world.

Nevertheless, The Cove is a great movie. I've seen it too.

Is TS vying for the champion gravedigger award 2009?

I have a Japanese friend that feels very strongly against the western media for going against the Japanese whale and dolphin hunting. He say's it's part of his culture and traditions and they waste no part of the whales down to the bone. Chinese traditions are now also under the Western microscope with regards to sharkfin soup. Because Chinese people love it so much the sharks are having their fins cut off and bodys thrown back in the water leading to sharks being endangered. I wonder how much is true or false? Personally I have given up sharkfin soup and stick with imitation.

My feeling is that while traditions were fine in the past like whale hunting or rhino horn cutting or bear paw. Now that more and more of the world can afford these exotic ingredients the practice is no longer sustainable in the world. We also have an unfair advantage of using modern equipment against animals as well so while I can understand the strong feeling for traditional foods and practice maybe some things like whaling and sharkfin cutting should be just left in the past.

in a sense you're right. when i was in Poly, i studied HR. guess which country's always advocating women's rights? well, The USA. and guess amongst all the countries, which country has one of the lowest ratio of females to males in CEO/power positions? well, you got it right! it's the USA. honestly, the USA should just stop telling people what they should and should not do. they're not God.

^ I think the argument against whale and dolphin hunting in the U.S. is that whales and dophins are highly intelligent and shouldn't be hunted, but at the same time Americans also eat a lot of pork but pigs are also highly intelligent. It is hypocrisy! When it comes to killing animals for food, according to buddhists all life is the same big or small so you are always in the wrong by eating other living things especially when you can live without doing so. But don't add value judgement to who can eat what when your own industry can be criticised. Only thing you can do I guess in modern society is kill and eat what your conscience allows you to.

The westerners will always like to think and tell everyone that their culture is the most civilized and right.

Maybe they should stop eating beef because the cow the is sacred to Buddhist and Hindus.

I'd agree that we should let depleting resources have a rest from further exploitation, but not the smearing of other people's cultures.

hmm but the thing is...you dun eat dolphin meat..coz there's mercury in it

Do u know in some western countries they slaughter horses the way they do like cattle for their meat?
Its not about who killing or eating what animal species.
Human being has evolved to a point where we no longer hunt and kill for survival, its all about economical imperative$.
Every animal is now a resource waiting to be exploited for capitalistic gains.

Its also there in other large predator fish like Tuna, Shark (common ones), Sting-ray and King Mackerel.
Tuna stocks are also depleting at an alarming rate, and tuna fishing can be a cruel/wasteful and bloody, but as long as the ang-mo eats them, there won't be to much mention of this being cruel/evil.

My take on this is if there are sufficient quantities in the wild, it is ok to eat without wasting any part of it. I do know that Shark fins, bones and meat can be eaten. On the other hand, it is the method of fishing that is in question. If you are trawling a net, what gets caught is not just the shark but everything in the nets' way.

It is those rhino horns, elephant's tasks, bear's gut, etc that are terrible. You kill the entire animal, take a specific part and leave the rest to rot.

Do not take more than what you need.

Some may call me a hypocrite, I am against the slaughter of wild animals for their meat. But I admit I do have a stable protein diet of fish, chicken and pork.
I tried to go full vegan but I just can't do it.
In the end, I banned myself from eating shark's fins, deer meat, beef, snake, crocodile, ostrich, pangolin.... basically any wild animals that do not belong to part of my daily diet, not even for the fun of eating it and I do not consume more than my conscience allows.
I am happy to be the 'eat to live, rather than the live to eat' person.
I do not wish to add to the 'harm' of killing more living things to whet my appetite.
As much as I can I will go for more vege and toufu in my meals, and it is actually healthier too!
As the Buddhism says '酒肉穿肠过‘

No offence or anything against culture and religion but u r comparing it to domesticated animals. Pigs and cows have been domesticated, ie we are not endangering the population of said species even by eating them. Eco-systems are not directly affected when we kill farmed cows and pigs for consumption. Whales, sharks, dolphins have yet to be domesticated in large quantities as a form of food. Catching them in the wild simply lowers their population to such an extend where even a black tip/white tip shark is like a WOW while diving now.

Was recently in the taiwan and our host treated us to dinner. Napoleon wrasse was served. They were so proud that it is considered illegal in certain areas to have that. They are totally ignorant that the said species population has greatly declined. I rem when I first started diving less than 10 years ago, I often sighted the fish. However it has become rather rare nowadays as well

It has nothing to do with the west vs the east, nor should we kid ourselves that the entire world is switching over to hinduism or buddhism anytime soon so the rest of the world still has got to eat. Its best if they choose to eat, to eat something that doesnt whack the wild food chain out of sync right? Documentary films such as these are good as it brings awareness visually especially to the young whom are mostly ignorant of such practices. So hopefully when they grow up, they dont indulge in such practices.
