Hi guys,

Thinking of modding my coolpix 995 for IR photography. I got a couple of questions to ask and hope some of you can help.

1. Does it take color IR? Or B & W?
2. I need to replace the hot mirror. Can I make use of the Cokin P007?
3. Where can I get Cokin P007 in Singapore?
4. Anybody attempted this before?

Thanks.

Cokin P007 is not the best material to use... we tried to cut it before and the result is not good.

Cokin 007? heheh i got an extra copy! can sell u if u want. But if your purpose is to replace the "hot mirror" i think using a R72 would be a better idea.

I don't know if any one attempted with your model... but Deadpixel is one of our more daring person... wait for him to reply u better....

How do I get hold of the R72 material to replace my 'hot mirror'? Is the Cokin 007 very expensive?

Also, do I need to worry about the thickness of the 'hot mirror' and replacing it?

I did modify my Sony DSC-75 which I paid $1260 few years back then. after the modification the whole screen look red. so I switch to B/W mode. but now the cam can focus macro only. normal focus is out ,even though the camera "say" focus is lock. I just remove the IR filter only, may be need to add normal filter. alamak, how to get a glass that size:cool:

May I know how much is the 77mm IR filter ?

Did you do a custom WB on a patch of green grass?

Somewhere in the region of $270-280, I think.

So back to my question. Can anyone help? :dunno:

Go to CP to get a filter ... i think a small one should work out well.
Get it cut.

Cokin is not expensive i think it's 30+.

ERRRR that 1 must wait for deadpixel :p

Wah...

What's the smallest size and how much?
How to cut? Glass cutter?
What if the thickness is thicker or too thin than the 'hot mirror'?

No longer playing IR cos no skill for it.

Let me know if you wanna buy it. :)

Trying visiting this site for details on modding your CP995:

CP995 Modding Instructions at Lifepixel

I've modded a number of different cameras before, but not the Coolpix series, so I can't tell you the dimensions of the hotmirror. However you could take it out to measure it than quickly cut an R72 or ELP to the proper size.

Cheers,
Matt

Hi Deadpixel,

Thank you for the link. It's the exact link that I found on the web. Just that I'm not too certain on the 'hot mirror' part. Does the thickness of the glass or R72 matters?

So you recommend that I cut a R72. Can you explain what tools I should use to cut and probably how to do it and any precautions to take? This means I'll have to invest on a R72 filter, right?

Thanks.

Thin you need to know the exact dimension of the hot mirror. If you used a R72 glass of different thickness, the glass might not fit in even though the length and width is the same. I think I have came across a website that specifies the dimensions, but I need to go home and find it (link in my browser, not here at work :P). Will post it here if I find it.

The other alternative is using clear glass to replace the hot mirror and then use a R72 filter outside the camera (using an adaptor, like how you attach filters). Clear glass can be obtained from microscope slides or UV filter. These are cheaper and if you screw up during glass cutting, they are less painful. R72 filters not cheap and I wouldn't want to risk cutting them...:nono:

A very sound advise. Maybe I will go this route instead. Where to get miroscope slides har? Also, I think I might be able to get a 46mm adapter from Binbeto but do you know if 46mm R72 is readily available? The Nikon 995 has 28mm thread, so definitely need adapter as no one sells 28mm filters, right?
