MO: X-Drive II (New Shipment)

Eastgear, the X-Drive II works ok. I opened up the case, put in a IBM 20GB HDD, and did a charge-up yesterday. When the battery is full (about 2 hrs later), then the red LED switch off by itself. Below are some feedback if the manufacturer ever ask you how to improve.

1. The red LED is extremely bright, it is more like a lamp then a normal LED! Would recommend the mfr to change to a less powerful LED.

2. The universal charger socket can accept 100-240V, but the pin is only the 3-pin type. If you ever see the universal charger socket design of a Motorola handphone or a Palm pilot, you would know what I mean. The design has a built-in 2-pin AND 3-pin module, hence it is truely universal.

Thanks for your feedback, I will forward these feedback to the manufacturer. Below is my response to your 2nd feedback:

3 pin design are safer as they provide true earthing which a 3 pin adaptor/module does not provide. Moreover, the U.S. 2 pin design (used in Motorola & Palm) is not compatible with europe & australia, so you would still require to get an adaptor for these places.

A simple universal pin adaptor will allow the 3 pin to convert to any pin type easily.

True, but a higher performance harddisk would aid in faster transfer from memory card to harddisk and from harddisk to PC, which would in turn reduce the operation time of the unit and save battery energy.

Anyway we are flexible and you get either the 4200rpm or 5400rpm harddisk installed into the X-Drive II.

Not really, since the bottle neck here is in the reading speed of the memory card.

Currently even the slowest HDD with the smallest buffer, will still read faster than the fastest CF (even if it's a 100X read CF) and it will still have to "wait" for the CF to catch up.

The transfer from X-Drive II to PC is also similar. The bottle neck in this case is the USB 2.0, therotically rated at 480Mbps.(USB 1.0 is 12Mbps only). Though you never achieve that maximum speed in reality.

So the faster HDD is still "crippled" inside any USB 2.0 or Firewire external enclosure.

You will only see the diff if you connected the HDD in a PC or laptop via IDE.

Any one with a X-Drive running on 4200RPM HDD and another at 5400RPM HDD.
Copied a set of idential files of the same size (maybe 512Mb worth of images or 1GB) using 2 x similar brand and speed of CF to the X-Drive and timed it?

Even the fastest harddisk do not exceed 20MB/s, I do not see why USB2.0 (480Mbps or 60MB/s) and Firewire (400Mbps or 50MB/s) can be the bottleneck.

how fast is the x drive II transfer speed when compared to an average external hdd?

It's supports USB 2.0, so it's as fast as any USB 2.0 ext HDD

so do u still have the xdrive2 available?
thanks!

Can this used as USB portable HD on pc??

It means that the X-Drive II does not have a slot for XD card, it requires a CF adaptor in order to connect to the X-Drive II. The adaptor shouldn't be too expensive, around $10 or less.

Hi, then, can a camera which uses CF card use XD card with this adaptor???

yup, as long as you use the adapter for the XD card, you should be able to use it in any device with CF slot.
