Hi,

Am very new to this forums and would like to ask a question !

I just replaced the light seals at the back for some of my old SLRs using knitting string and felt. Do you guys think it is wise to use the same felt to replace the foam for the mirror bumper?

Thanks everyone for the help !

Hi, Knitting string/felt don't absorb shock that well. You can try similar foam from mobile phone packagaing or other electronic goods,it's free when you go round
looking at your neigbourhood dustbin areas.Another type is aircon insultion pipe tubing (black),cut them to size and use, also free when house owner installs aircon
and when finish installing, workmen usually discard short lengths of tubing.

actually.. the mirror foam isnt meant to absorb shock, but rather to prevent light from the viewfinder eyepiece entering the mirror box during exposure. so felt should work. BUT felt will slowly shed little fibers which may get stuck in the shutter/mechanics or go into the lens. i stopped using felt for the light seals cos of that reason too. go to art friend and look for black foam, something like mouse pad material, i ve found that to be the best thing to use.
