Hi,

I am looking for a pocket size digicam.
Seem that the review for Xt is quite good.
Is it better than the others like Optio S and EX-Z3 ?
Any comments ?

What is the market price in Singapore, any good deals now ?
Thanks.
:dunno:

Hi,
I am a Dimage XI owner (the model before the new Xt). The new Xt is even smaller and looks better. Before I bought my camera end last year, my research was also on the Optio and Casio Exilim cameras. Why I pick Minolta over the rest:

- Exilim and Optio almost the same, it seems Casio uses Pentax lenses and and shares the same technology, so cameras are similar in features. No video out port (means you cannot connect to a TV for playback. This is useful if you travel overseas and wants to view your images taken on large screen).

- Exilim and Optio has protruding lenses and barrels. If due to accidents, barrels might be "hurt" or "pushed". Minolta Dimage cameras lenses are "inside" (even during zoom)

- Minolta Dimage much lighter, slimmer, and has a date imprinting function (which most digital cameras do not have, although this is pretty common in normal film cameras)

- Casio (it seems) has only a sales and marketing office in Singapore, no special or specific service centre. Unlike Minolta, which has a proper head office, showroom, service centre etc.

The Xt has improved features over the Xi like Extended Movie Recording (most cameras only let you record up to certain number of seconds), macro, video conferencing etc. As for my Xi, picture quality, shutter speed, and a host of other features are pretty good for such a slim pocket size camera. You literally bring it with you everywhere, unlike other "fatter" compact cameras.

Last time I checked on the price, retail is $799 in big stores (like Harvey Norman). MSColour (in Ang Mo Kio) quoted me over the phone $650 w GST (I bought mine from Alan Photo, have never been to MSColour but heard their service and prices are pretty good). While you are there, get another SD memory card (at least 128MB at just below $100) so that you can take at least 60 shots on 3.2 megapixel resolution.

Hope the above information helps. BTW, I am selling my XI (to upgrade) if you or anyone you know are interested. My camera was the first batch, ie. Made In Japan (only limited numbers were sold worldwide) whereas the 2nd shipment were Made In China or Malaysia. I heard the Xt sold here are Made In China, which accounts for the cheaper pricing than the earlier XI.

Hope the above information helps in your decision!!!!

it would b great if u could give us a review after u use it for a few weeks...

So sorry, I have bought another camera instead.
It is a rare Sanyo DSC-MZ3, 2Meg cam at $499.
It has 3x lens, voice movie, webcam, voice recorder and even manual controls.
Only set back is that the pic quality sucks.
But, good for casual use.

one cents for one quality, cannot ask for more. It has plenty of value added functions already.

;) Got myself a Monolta Xt, picture quality is good up to my expectations plus the size is so slim and compact it's good for sightseeing. Yet to try the other functions.

i can HIGHLY recommend minolta dimage "x" range of cameras..

i own the original Minolta Dimage X...

and i can still say its THE BEST camera to bring along for parties, outtings with friends etc..

Its so small, its abt the size of a medium size handphone.. and u can always just whip it out and snap!!

Even the 2mp Dimage X is good enuff for me...

Good batt life, super fast startup... i never miss a shot..

After i bought my G3, i was considering selling my dimage x, i mean after lal, why have so many cameras?

But i realised G3 and dimage x serve 2 completely different purposes...

i still use BOTH G3 AND Dimage X......

i will HIGHLY recommend u get the Xt... with more mp, and much better features, it is def a good buy...

BTW, the movie mode of this cam is superb...

The movie quality is much better than my G3 movie can u believe it???

But of coz pictures quality G3 win hands down lah..

Batt life is surprisingly very good... heng haven't bought the extra batt. Was using 100% flash at a bbq under darkness (bday tekan session), using pic-review but no live LCD. managed to shoot 110+ shots (256 meg) not counting rejects. Some browsing of pics. Went home download all these and the batt meter still not at HALF.
BUT, it's a very small cam for me...

now to OT: wanna buy mine? ;p

denizenx can i ask u:

under darkish conditions (note, not PITCH BLACK of course... just low light)

does the dimage xt LCD turn VERY dark??

for my dimage x, its sooo dark i can't even use the live review to take fotos... need to use view finder.....

i tot something wrong wiht my cam, btu its just the nature of the super small (1cm diameter) lens..

is it sitll the same witht he dimage xt?

Hi! it does, but so do my other cameras... when u press the shutter it previews the exposure, but I can see on the LCD what the eye can see... it's the night AF that' a prob... but then again a minolta 500xi couldn't see either...

I currently own the X and intent to get the Xt soon. The battery life is amazing, it can almost last indefinitely when the LCD is turned off.

The internal zoom is a major deciding factor. The startup is amazing, during the time for my friend's IXUS to power up I had already snap off countless shots, valuable time saver.

*I intend to sell the X. Anyone interested? $350, standard package but the pouch is rather worn (normal wear n tear). Camera is in excellent condition (though the plastic battery door have some paint peeled off, not very noticeable).

In XT there is the LCD brightness control, do u think this helps int the above?

Ally

When you lower the brightness of the LCD, you have to remember it the next time you shoot, you might see the picture as dark but actually it's already quite bright. So you will tend to make it brighter and you'll get over-exposed shots.
