Medium Format film scanned via Flatbed VS 35mm scanned via dedicated film scanner.

Lets say I scan a medium format film at 300dpi on my Canon 5200f flatbed.
And then I scan a 35mm film using a KM Dual Scan IV.

Which will yield better results, sharper pictures still ?

I tend to think MF. Yes ?

300 dpi may not be able to extract enough information from the neg from the flatbed vs the dedicated scanner

i am not sure about the dual scan IV but you could go up to 4000dpi for the coolscan V
i think that resolution will blow away the MF on a flatbed

my 2 cents

a lot of other factors come into play like the dmax of the scanner and the true resolution of the lens. The latest generation epson v750 will give most dedicated film scanners a run for their money but compared against more generic flatbeds, the SD IV will hold its own quite well and will probably outdo you flatbed scan. Also, as HD mentioned, 300dpi is nothing compared to the 2800 dpi on the SDIV

at least use a dedicated scanner for film...flatbeds are not sufficient.

I have run a comparison with a 6x12 slide and saved file as TIFF, at 3200 dpi scanning res, between my flatbed Epson V700 (similar to V750 but can't apply gel) and my friends Flextight (from a reputable DI agency in Singapore)..........

The Flextight was very minor sharper, biggest difference was the 'lightness' in the shadowdetails of the Flextight scan, but the same lightness can be achieved after making the Epson scan lighter, at the end both have very similar shadowdetails, however there was a colour difference.

I think the price difference doesn't justify the quality difference for medium format and larger, for 35mm the fliextight is better I assume, and dedicated film scanners even better as they scan directly onto the film and not through a glass

BTW: For medium format and larger one doesn't really need a dedicated film scanner as I have done a scan of that same 6x12 slide image on a cheap Microtek scanner (6100) and had a print made at 1m 20cm high or thereabouts

wow how's the sharpness? i need the texture of the grains to show..

my MF been sitting in the cabinet for sometime. shooting and professing is fine, but scanning costs at least 15 bucks per image at fotohub at A3+ size for offset print standard, quite a pain. or about 40 bucks per image at color separation facilities with a few proof prints.

Yes, can see the grain, even with my cheap Microtek 6100 scanner at high dpi scanned......
