hi,

Do you think is good to invest into this adaptor? is there any place i can get in Sg off the shelf.

is it worth go get this, plan to get one for my Minolta 5D

i'm diggin up this old post... anyone knows how much is M/A converter going for?

i am still searching...

although one will argue with me.. but I don't think it is that worthwhile given the price on eBay nowadays for such a converter. I paid $60 years ago and I always find that the converter does degrade the image quality slightly.

Nice to play around if you can find one cheap or willing to part with your big $$$.

Just my opinion.

Hart

if you have MD mount lenses you might want to get one. i got one recently for about $120 (double of what Hart paid), not sure about image degradation, he's probably right, but my MD lenses aren't in that great shape either so i won't know.. i don't think this is available in S'pore, you'll prob have to go eBay to get one.

oh, another thing to consider is the AF ability. Most people will hate to MF unless in Macro mode.

Seriously, I don't recommend one, but well, if you have spare cash lying around and enjoy manual focussing, this is probably for you.

Then it is up to you to find some of the best Rokkor lenses to use with it. The best rokkor lenses aren't cheap too and no auto focus.

regards,

Hart

then you got to change the focusing screen to one of those with micro prism
so you can focus better .... and give a review how well it works with the 7D
so i can decide whether to do that "upgrade"

is that really necessary? i don't have problems using full manual with whatever lens on my 5D, even 300mm on a 2x converter on manual. i don't think manual focussing is that hard, come on guys, people before us had no af... ;)

hi triggerhappy
how much did you pay for your M/A converter?

Sure MF at f8 is not hard, but MF at f2 is extremely difficult as if you get it wrong, you got an OOF image. Especially with longer focal length. (I am talking about 85mm onward). Maybe my MF skill is sucks...:bsmilie:

MF is also not hard if you are not in hurry.

Focussing screen is not crucial...

If you have 300mm and 2x converter and manual focus, chances are the subject is so close to you and you can MF it properly. if the subject only represent 10% of the frames, that is hard to MF, at least to me.

Hart

What Hart Said

plus if you ever used a MF old style camera ...
say X-700 with a microprism focus screen
as opposed to the 7D with just the acute matte screen

you will definately appreciate the way focus pops into sharpness with the microprism.
not that i cannot manual focus with the 7D.... but i can use more pop : )

that's right...

but microprism is good for manual focus... fast action, you would like to see the frame more with acute matte... hence it is quite a toss between the two. Each has its own benefit and penalty.

I use rokkor lens on my X-700+motor drive for studio portrait and scan the negs. Since I can control the lighting, it has less variable to work with. It works well, but fast action wedding photography MF is way too slow and I often miss the shot  , hence AF is crucial.

Hart

We need a camera that can change focussing screens on the fly...;)

yeah.. i tried those split screen type focusing screen on MF bodies.. real sweet and easy to check whether it's in focus...
anyone has MF body for sale? :) lol

Although I said the converter is not the upmost interesting items, but I have one, will use them every now and then, if stop down, it works fine for me.

Now, my friend just told me that he might be able to order some quantity of the MD to AF converter. Price I am not sure yet at this stage, but can you please PM me to let me know if you are interested. Of course, no obligation...

Once I know roughly how many, I will ask my friend for pricing. If everything is well and good. I can help you guys order it.

Remember, I might not earn a cent from this trade, please try to be reasonable and I hope to accomodate as many people as possible.

My rough guess the price will be around $220~$250 for a brand spanking new unit.

I will test the converter (can only test one), and make sure I am getting the best converter I can get. If the converter is the sharp type, I am happy to buy one myself.

It is not cheap, but I guess if you have the converter plus a 50mm f1.2 or 58mm f1.2, you are having a 80mm f1.4 lens (to my knowledge, there is a 1.05x focal magnification). For less than $800.

I might be able to source some 85mm f1.7 or 50mm f1.2 or 58mm f1.2 in that matter from my friend, of course price is unknown.

So please PM me with your expression of interest, so once I have everything finalise (need to wait for at least 2-3 weeks). I will let you guys know.

Regards,

Hart

yo hart
thnx for the offer!
is that the usual price for a converter?

my impression of a converter does not have a lens element, hence the price would be cheap..:dunno: guess i'm wrong eh...

Hi there,

No, the price is actually on high side... but I was told that the quality of the glass will be fully coated version, hence will be sharp... (I will believe when i got one to try).

MD-AF converter has a glass element.

Extension tubes don't, maybe you mistaken?

i tot a converter is like 2 diff mounts on each side :S.. lol..

i'm wondering how much is a 58/1.2 + converter cost... it will be a pretty fun combination to use.. or prob should just get a cheap film body to play with..

Yes, it is Manual mount on front and AF mount at the back so you can use some finest Rokkor lens with the converter.

Well someone is selling on B&S for $360 ($58 f1.2) and if you add another $200, its about $560 for a 80mm f1.2 lens I think it is much cheaper than a 85mm f1.4 G or CZ 85mm f1.4 well at least $800 cheaper... Sharper? not sure.. further testing will be done when I received the sample Md to AF converter.

Will do some test sample when I am back in Sydney... if it is good, I will get a range of Rokkor lenses.

Hart

Dear Hart ... have you tested out the converter with a Rokkor lens comparing to a 85mm AF Lens.

I'm wondering should I go for the slim one you got or the 2x that can be found on ebay?
