Manual focus readings

Hi,

I've learnt from a filmmaking class to use manual focus on the focus ring, which gives readings on the LCD screen (eg; dialling down from 0 to 100). This I found convenient because you can "memorise" the different focus readings needed for each part of the scene if focus shifts.

Can anyone advise how this can be best done on DSLR cameras? Eg; shooting on 5D mark II/III, does the Magic Lantern add-on let you see the focus readings overlaid on screen? I've had a problem changing focus within a scene when shooting action, given the small camera screen.

Thanks to anyone who can advise! :D

Depends on lens

For MFT, my GH2 displays an onscreen linear scale when manual focus is activated on a native micro43 lens. No numbers; just a pointer on a straight line between a "tulip" (min focus distance) and a "mountain".(infinity) No way to mark points unless I strap a rubberband around the LCD screen.
Or you can use this:

or simply wrap 2 silicone frendship bands around your lens and mark with paper clips.

Thanks for the advice! Hmm it looks like a follow focus is what I'm looking for if shooting with a dSLR.
