M42 Mount

Anybody uses the M42 mount. I'm curious how to use it.

i have one. its a flat ring (couple of mm), one side fits on your KM A-mount (5d, 7d... etc) while the other is a screw-thread, which allows you to mount a whole range of old lenses and others like zenitar, peleng -- mainly for fisheye. i posted an old thread here on that in the KM forum, see if you can find it, there's a website link with a comprehensive list of m42 mount lenses that you can use on your 5d - provided you can find those lenses... one more thing, no AF, need to use manual.

got one for $75 from fotografix in lucky chinatown. but the old man mr wong is one super rude on the phone... although quite an ok chap in person

there are some ebay posts selling this for < $10, shipping from Hk. you may want to give that a shot and save yourself some $$$

Trigger Happy does the metering on the camera still work.

got the adapter but then the peleng didn't fit, so no idea if metering still works. i would guess NO. can someone confirm/ correct this?

Trigger Happy did some experiment took my 18-70mm lens and tape off the electronic contacts. The camera is till able to controller the shutter speed which probably means the metering is still working.

but not sure if the same applies with the m42 screw mount.. why the interest in the m42 anyway? in hindsight i think it was a silly idea and i still hold to that view, unless you (or i) have access to a set of m42 type lenses that some uncle of ours wants to give away.. haha...

I was told they were cheaper. You can get a 8mm fisheye for under SGD500. Saw someone post the image and they look quite sharp.

I have minolta bodies and quite a few M42 lenses, and it is not pass down by some uncles. The main reason for that is because there are quite a few M42 lenses with outstanding optics. You can get a 85mm f/1.8 at more the half the price of a Minolta 85mm f/1.4 ..... heck, you can get a Jupiter 85mm f/2 at $100, that is 10% of what a Minolta 85mm f/1.4 is.

The extremely long lenses and ultra wide angle lenses are relatively cheaper at M42 mount too. For Ultra Wide Angle lenses focusing is not much problem since it reaches infinity at a relatively short distance and for extremely long lenses, it is not much problem too since you can't rely on Autofocus for Extremely long lenses anyway.

Their lenses are often more expensive then others, but their service is also one of the better ones too.

blurblock just went to a shop in penisula which sells M42 lens and the minolta adaptor. Can't remember the name. It's near the escalator and they sell all tupes of Tamron lens.

I rather buy M42 lens from overseas than locally. Total price including shipping tend to be cheaper than what we can get locally... I got a 135mm f3.5 lens for around SGD$50 total!
Here it is, still in excellent condition!

you can say that again ....... when my monster 1000mm lens comes in .... I post a picture of it mounted on my minolta body .... LOL.....
